Folks,
I got my Airtel HD Set top box early this year. I had been using 5.1 sound through Optical cable only. But I wish it came through HDMI. Now I see they advertise 7.1. Is that really the case? Anyone got a 7.1? Anyone gets atleast 5.1 sound through HDMI ? Or could it be that they newer HD boxes run 5.1 through HDMI ? Please enlighten me!

no 7.1.......its mal advertiseing...
the box is capable to deliver 7.1 via hdmi..
but it is not delivering it.
plus there is presently no channel delivering 7.1...

Airtel HD STB delivers 5.1 Dolby Digital sound through Optical cable only. It must deliver 5.1 Dolby sound via HDMI as well, but it just seems to be a firmware issue which has not been resolved despite repeated follow-ups and complaints with Airtel DTH. Such ignorant fellow seems to be working in Airtel's technical department; they should have resolved it long back !! Why should a customer bear extra cost for Optical cable ?

As far as 7.1 (Dolby Digital Plus) sound is concerned, Airtel/Tata Sky/Videocon everybody keep on advertising providing 7.1 sound, but there is no such instance at all. None of the HD channel deliver 7.1 sound so far. I even doubt their STBs may not support 7.1 DDPlus sound.
Just a fake advertising by all these DTH providers!!
This can happen only in India; companies find all the ways to fool and lure customers by thinking nobody would realize these false claims !!

Does airtel provide 5.1 audio in all HD channels? I am using dishtv, and i get 5.1 audio in only one channel, i.e., movies now.

Airtel Provides 5.1 audio on following HD channels only:

Star Plus HD, Colors HD, Sony HD, Star World HD, Star Gold HD, Movies Now HD, Star Movies HD, Zee Studio HD, History TV HD, Discovery HD, NGC HD

Rest all HD channels have Stereo Sound.

Thanks for the reply guys. While I find the optical cable solution to be working (with Matrix decoding on my Denon 1611 gives DD EX), I am still disappointed that airtel missed the finishing line by not supporting audio through HDMI.

Anyways, I have one problem though, and I am not sure if it is just me. The Dolby D sound volume in HD Channels is low compared to the sound on other channels. In fact on the HD Channels the sound seems a little louder when the ad comes out and when the program with 5.1 DD sound comes the volume is lower. I have to keep increasing the volume for this. Is there any setting to fix this or is it something we have to live with until we get 5.1 through HDMI ?

Audio Level automatically increases under default audio settings on channels whenever the Advertisements start coming.
TRAI had made some regulations 6 months back to regulate the Advertisements Duration and other related issue.

Major points were:

- Broadcasters will have to limit the duration of advertisements to 12 minutes per clock hour.
- Part screen advertisements and drop down advertisements will not be permitted.
- Broadcasters will also have to maintain a time gap of 15 minutes between two consecutive advertisement breaks.
- In addition, broadcasters will have to ensure that the audio level of the advertisements should not be higher than the audio level of the programmes.

But it seems TRAI has compromised customers' issues and these rules are still NOT in place.

You can read following official news and attached PDF file to understand the whole scenario.

I also have a airtel dth hd with recorder STB and i have conncetd my stb to my avr denon2113 through HDMI and Optical cable. how does one know if one is getting stereo sound or 5.1DD. please enlighten.
thanks

Your AVR should show Dolby Digital if the signal is in DD. Otherwise it will show the name of the prologic surround you have enabled.

I've been using AIRTEL HD dth since more than year, I've never observed that any HD channel to give neither 7.1/5.1 audio output. These HD channel simpley sending 2.1 output (digital Stereo). Comming to SD channels no channel produces even stereo...and no clarity as Airtel advertises CD quality audio on SD channels.I'm using ONKYO 7.1 home theatre which has the intellignce to detect the audio which it receives.

You should use Optical Out of the STB to connect to your Onkyo system through a Toslink Optical Cable. Then only you'll receive 5.1 on few HD channels. Unfortunately there is no 5.1 support through HDMI cable in Airtel HD STB currently.

i have connected SPDIF cable from airtel HD stb to my denon AVR, but it still shows stereo sound. can anyone help.
tried to call airtel customer care, they have no idea as to what is the difference between stereo and DD. they sent some road side installation illiterate so to say engineers to check the same. i tried to teach them the difference between stereo and DD, but gave after sometime as it was no use because their IQ level was less than my 6 year old kid.
help!

Cheers

Which channels are you trying?
Please note, Zee TV HD, Zee Cinema HD and all the Sports HD channels don't have 5.1 sound, only Stereo.
Try checking on rest of the HD channels which have 5.1 sound.

Hello Technobhatt,

I have AirTel HD-Recorder, hence would like to know what you did to connect 2TB to it?

I have TataSky HD and connected to my AVR. Although some programs claim DD-Plus, the blue HD light on AVR does not light up. AVR reports track as Dolby Digital.
