Hi All,

I have been a keen reader and follower of this forum and I must say all of your posts have helped me setup my home theater :)

I have airtel dth hd, denon 1312XP, sony bravia 40 LED

well ,I was surprised and frustrated with airtel dth hd which DOES NOT SENDS 5.1 DOLBY SOUND FROM HDMI,,,thats crazy and airtel technical support have no clue when we talk to them about this issue

so after doing a lot of research I did this setting and its working like a charm now

1) connect hdmi from DTH to AVR and HDMI from AVR to TV
2) (very imp) connect optical digital cable from DTH to AVR (this will give you dolby 5.1 sound on HD channels)

now in denon av receivers you have to select in input settings optical as audio , I must say denon is smart enough to take 5.1 audio of hd channels through optical and normal sound from hdmi...

now lastly you cant control volume of HD channel when its coming from optical so you have to program your airtel universal remote to work with denon AVR volume control

all set ... set the DTH default volume to say 40 and just keep chaning AVR volume

you will note a huge difference from 5.1 dolby true sound :)

That's true; Currently no DTH can pass 5.1 sound through HDMI. So you have to pass the sound through Optical or Coax.
However once you do this, there is no need to connect the DTH HDMI->AVR, you should directly connect it to the TV. This way you will get control over the volume as you will select the input as optical on AVR(TV/Sat/Cbl), and you will also have a choice to watch TV without powering AVR when not required.

Tata Sky HD STBs and Tata Sky+ HD STBs are able to give Dolby 5.1 through HDMI.

TS+HD still can't buddy :) Only TS HD has restored the functionality through latest update. TS+HD, even with manual option, doesn't pass DD5.1 through HDMI.

All these operators should be sued without further delay for duping the customers by continuing to tell they have 7.1 DD+ support when they are not even fixing regular DD pass through on HDMI!

prankey please stop spreading this false message about TS HD +. TS HD + can do DD 5.1 over HDMI.

Buddy I tried it several times after talking with you. I can paste screenshots like yours after setting it up. It just do not change anything for me. I even tried by setting SPDIF output as PCM, saving and than setting HDMI as DD. Tried all combinations.

And I have recorded phone conversation with Tatasky CEO contact confirming that it is not fixed yet for TS HD. It could be that some hardware versions of TS+HD support it. One more thing is I have connected it to my TV which supports DD audio through HDMI. I am testing by tweaking volume control which works even after setting output to DD and there is no switching audio drop happening no matter if I save as PCM or DD on HDMI output. This confirms that the setting is not working. I was the first person here and other forums who pointed to the TS HD users how to set it right for them to work. Never worked for me. Earlier some switching was happening, but now when I set it and save, nothing happens.

Lets not derail this thread as this issue is already escalated to the TS CEO, COO and CTO levels and their contact has already visited and confirmed that it is still not working on TS+HD boxes! Lets discuss further on appropriate threads.

Dear Prankey,
I've Tata sky+ HD and I was also not getting the DD5.1 sound over HDMI but couple of weeks back there was software update pushed by tata sky and after that This problem got resolved and now I've getting DD5.1 over HDMI and I'm not using optical or coax with my Setup box.
Please check the setting properly or may be you have got a faulty Setup box.

Cheers!

any one know when Airtel HD would have 5.1 DD pass through on HDMI

this seems so simple to fix .. well its definately s/w fault

So you got it after v105 update? TS folks are claiming that 106 has fixed it but I don't see the option working for me as changing it do not break the audio (to switch the stream like in SPDIF). Not sure what's the issue. Could be my box or the TV.

I am actually more concerned about the DRC on most of the channels which makes me strain myself just to listen to dialog and most of the effects are taken away by TS just because of that.

I am not able to get DD 5.1 from airtel DTH even attaching with optical to my AVR (onkyo 809). Would anybody confirms whether "Do optical ports in new AVRs emitt that red light" as mine does not. To confirm whether my optical ports on AVR is working I connected the optical from DTH to TV and no sound is heard from TV either (by discoonecting HDMI). I then assume that my DTH's optical is not working properly so I lodge a complaint about replacing the box. The airtel promises to replace in 1 or 2 days.

yes as far as I see when you open the small flip of the optical port you should see a light, if you dont see it then it seems to be a problem

I guess 809 have 2 optical in, try both of them and see if you get sound

and yeah one more stuff, y just connecting the optical cable from dth to avr wont work, you have to change the setting to let AVR see your optical connection and then take audio from there rather than from hdmi, you can check my 1st post for the same, i should be similar in onkyo

and lastly to make sure ur AVR optical is working try connecting any other media player and see if you get audio from that source

best of luck

Recently I bought YAMAHA YHT 299. I also have Airtel HD. Now I will probably need to connect it using optical audio to AVR and set the AVR input to optical. But at the same time i'll be connecting a Blu Ray player and Xbox to it. Now these two will probably send the DD audio over HDMI. If so setting the audio to Optical on AVR for Airtel, will it mess up with BDP and Xbox sound?

In the AVR you 'assigns' the optical/coaxial inputs to one of the HDMI port. When both optical and hdmi are receiving audio signals simultaneously, HDMI is given preference unless you specify to use the digital audio instead of HDMI. So your BDP and Xbox will continue to work without any problem.

Guys,

Airtel HD box does support 5.1 channel sound through HDMI. There is a setting for that. We need to goto Settings - User Settings - Audio

Here we need to se Dolby Digital Plus for the HDMI audio output. That's it, we will get the 5.1 channel sound on the supported channels. Thanks.

I have Videocon DTH with HD STB it can pass 5.1 DD sound via HDMI. Infact
My Denon AVR shows Dolby Digital for Satlite TV ( DD 5.1 is not available for all channels)
