Guys, Unfortunately with a tie up for my building I have ended up with the worst HD service ever with Airtel in the history of DTH. Now I have a technical question.
I have currently connected my new *aquisition* Panasonic P42X20D via HDMI to my Airtel STB. Few questions:

1) Will I get audio from the HDMI
2) How will Airtel pass Dolby Digital on National Geographic to my TV? Through HDMI? Will my Plasma be able to handle the Dolby signal in HDMI?
3) I know for sure that DTS is not playing through HDMI but would National Geographics audio play (that is Dolby Audio?)
4) Lastly I wanna know if I can connect the picture (video only) through HDMI and still get my stereo audio out to work (not optical) as I want to plug the stereo audio to my Logitech Z623. Will this work.

Hope my requirements are clear :)

yes u will get audio from tv through hdmi (not from hdmi ,just kidding man).

2) How will Airtel pass Dolby Digital on National Geographic to my TV? Through HDMI? Will my Plasma be able to handle the Dolby signal in HDMI?
yes id does,u will get a 2 channel audio.

3) I know for sure that DTS is not playing through HDMI but would National Geographics audio play (that is Dolby Audio?)
yes it will downmix to 2 channel,

''I know for sure that DTS is not playing through HDMI '' what u mean by it?
hdmi can carry dts signals........

yes u have to mute the tv and take audio out of the settop box to ur 2 channel amp....

I use Airtel HD as well, and Nat Geo HD audio is in stereo and not 5.1. I tested this by connecting the coaxial out of the HD STB to my Yamaha RX-V459 amp. Only stereo audio, which could be heard as Prologic.

And I also have the HD STB connected to my LG PJ560 50 inch plasma thru HDMI. I get superb sound on the TV. The external audio out from the STB should work as well if you connect it to your Logitech system.

I too have option of taking AIRTEL only...how is the performance of non-HD channels with HD STB ?
I am planning to buy a 40 Inch LCD.

pl check again coz my airtel hd dth gives 5.1 to my onkyo hts3300. connection is thru hdmi cable.

Actually, even I am using Airtel HD DTH and my receiver does not detect 5.1 ch sound when Nat GEO HD is played. It just gives out Stereo output. I have connected the STB to the receiver through HDMI cable. I have a Denon 1910 receiver btw.

Do I have to mess with the settings to get 5.1 audio or do you think I have a problem with the STB?

Seems some of us are unaware of the setting on Airtel HD STB to set DD5.1 output through HDMI or Coax output.

I do not think there is any such setting in the Airtel HD STB. To clear this up folks, take this:

Till now, there has been no 5.1 audio on Airtel HD. Only after the dish realignment which was done today, I am getting DD 5.1 audio on NGC HD.

Further, I have added the HD Chota Pack comprising NGC HD, Discovery HD World and Movies Now HD for 40 bucks a month plus tax. All these HD channels have lovely 5.1 sound.

I watched Speed 2 - Cruise Control on Movies Now HD with full 5.1 sound and it was pretty good. NGC HD is nice too and so is Discovery HD World. The channels are mapped properly and the dialogue/narration mostly comes from the centre speaker.

My Yam 459 AVR shows DOLBY DIGITAL as default now, when I select any of these HD channels.

Hope that clears some confusion. All Airtel HD users can rest assured that after the dish realignment, you would get DD 5.1 sound on the HD channels.

Warm regards,
Venkat

Even after the dish realignment, I am not getting 5.1 audio from the HD channels. My AVR shows input as Stereo only. I have connected the AVR and STB through HDMI. Is it really necessary to connect the audio separately through coaxial/optical to get 5.1 sound? Is anyone getting 5.1 sound when connected through HDMI?

I am getting dd sound when i connect stb with avr through coaxial cable not via hdmi

Even I am getting it now when I connected a co-axial cable. But, it does not make sense. HDMI is supposed to process DD sound. I'm not sure if this is a problem with the Airtel supplied HDMI cable or the STB.

It is a problem with STB or could be the software issue.

I have a simpler question. I am not getting any sound via hdmi when airtel set top box is connected to s9100 onkyo system. I am getting sound via hdmi only if i connect the set top box (airtel ) directly to tv. Whys is this so ?Do I need to change some settings ?

Help please

I use Airtel HD and got the dish direction changed yesterday. How should the cabling be - should I connect HDMI between the STB and the AVR and another HDMI from AVR to the TV? Or should I connect the HDMI from STB to the TV and use Co-axial from teh STB to the AVR?

My Samsung C530 also has an Optical out - so can I connect STB to TV using HDMI and use an optical cable from the TV to the AVR? I read i the documentation of the Samsung that Optical out carries only the Stereo and not 5.1.

Till they resolve HDMI Audio bug, you will have to use coaxial from STB to AVR to get DD5.1.

Yes, the entire range of Samsung TVs have this DOCUMENTED BUG/limitation of not passing the DD/DTS audio from HDMI through Optical output. They are able to pass DD/DTS from USB Video and if you have digital tuner, DD sound from it. This is very annoying if you have to use different digital connections (one from BR, another from STB) to get multi-channel audio from the AVR.

How did you try coax output? You just need to connect using a regular RCA cable to the coax input on your AVR. You would have to assign that input on the AVR to a source like VCR/CD/Bluray, etc.
