Hi All,

I am planning to upgrade my Airtel STB to HD STB. As such I am happy with airtel services but I heard somewhere that Airtel does not passthrough Dolby Digital sound through HDMI Cable. I want to confirm it from airtel users whether it's true or not? So if it's true then it means I'll have to connect HD STB to my AVR through coaxial/digital optical out.

I seek your info on above issue.

Yes none of the sevice providers provide 5.1 audio through HDMI. This was the situation till about 6 months back as I know. Not sure if things have changed recently. You will have to connect an additional Optical cable from STB to AVR.

I think someone has posted that one of the service providers has upgraded SW & now it can pass 5.1 audio via HDMI.

^^It is indeed correct..also there is option of coaxial output as well along with HDMI and optical.

I would use digital out over hdmi since this way I don't have to keep the avr powered on always just to watch TV. This not only saves precious energy but prolongs the AVR life if the place has voltage fluctuations. That said, reliance hd has no surround sound through hdmi or coaxial out.

Airtel does not support dolby through HDMI. It can support dolby through optical out. As of now I am using optical out only for Dolby.

Tatasky supports HD audio via HDMI - it always has been that way. Videocon started supporting the same as confirmed by lake1988. Airtel is not supporting Dolby Digital + via HDMI - only via optical.

If you are thinking about upgrading to Airtel HD, then you will need to connect the HDMI-out (for video) and optical out (for audio) to your Yamaha AVR and pair the optical out to HDMI channel where STB is connected.

A Just4Kix mentioned, Tatasky is providing 5.1 Sorround over HDMI since its inception. So if you want bare minimum wiring TataSky is the answer. But mind that TS has the least no of HD channels amongst all the DTH. Keep this also in mind while choosing/upgrading to HD

I had just ordered an Airtel HD upgrade.
There was an offer on the airtel site that for existing customers you get this for Rs 1800 only insead of Rs 2390.
When the installation guy came i found that the HD STB was in an open box. Remote and power adapter were missing.
The guy told me that this is the regular upgrade practice.
Mu question is is this a normal practice or i was being taken for a ride.
