Lyrical, pretty ,bluesy and swinging Jazz….
One of the hidden gems in the Blue Note catalogue.
It’s a pity that Sonny Red fell into obscurity after only a few recordings. If you like this, do check out some of the Donald Byrd albums where he’s a sideman. IIRC, Mustang was one of them.

@coaltrain I love your posts because they are always accompanied by 'your' liner notes :)

Thanks for the reminder! I have a CD-R copy of their album Jade.
For some reason, their albums are really hard to find on cd or vinyl.
Agreed! Although Jade and a few of their other albums have been reissued recently and are available in limited quantities on vinyl via their Bandcamp store:

Wow! Bandcamp seems to offer some pretty sweet deals.
Do you order direct to B’lore? I always get shafted by customs here.

This is my 20th Lee Morgan album on Blue Note; and yet, there are still five more to go!
If you include all his dates as a sideman, that’s a prodigious output for someone who only lived till 33.
The Latin vibe on this album makes it one of Lee’s more upbeat recording sessions. Not his best, but a lot of fun.

Lee Morgan was among the first of my favorites (Sidewinder and Cornbread) when I started on my jazz journey.
Still remains some of the best jazz anytime I want to listen to something.

Considering that he started recording when he was just 17 and released his first album as a band leader when he was just 18, he still had 17 years before he left us (under shocking circumstances). I prefer the early Morgan as in Blue Train and his early years with Art Blakey to his later recordings of the Sidewinder era.

Yup, I get hit with customs charges too if I order directly. It's always better to send a bunch of orders to a friend in that region and then have them ship them together in one parcel using the most affordable shipping option. Bandcamp, in particular, has ridiculous shipping charges since they don't set the shipping price themselves; the individual band/label does.

I’m in Nikhil’s camp; love everything that Lee did :)
But if I had to pick a favourite album, it would be Search for a New Land. The title track has a gravitas that you don’t usually equate with LM.

Ben was right about death and taxes :(
