My only LP of the great Davis 2nd quintet. And boy isn't it special.

Today's playlist. Two favorites from last year on top:
Tarun Balani - Kadahin Milandaasin: The drummer's second album is a tribute to his grandfather Khialdas Suratram Balani, an illustrator, artist and photographer, who migrated from Sindh, Pakistan to Delhi’s refugee colony Lajpat Nagar during the Partition. Ordered this copy directly from Tarun who sent it from the same house in Lajpat Nagar.

Sinsuke Fujieda Group - Fukushima:
This album has been all the rage in the jazz vinyl world, with first pressings selling out and going for over $100. Was lucky to get my hands on the second pressing from Superfly Records.

And two all time classics on the bottom:
Zakir Hussain - Making Music:

Zakir's only release on the legendary German label ECM alongside longtime collaborators Hariprasad Chaurasia and John McLaughlin as well as label mainstay Jan Garbarek.

Charles Tolliver - Music Inc:
The first release on the iconic Strata East label also happens to be one of my favorite big band recordings.

Yep, crossed the 500 records mark recently, so went for the IKEA Eket this time. Has a smaller form factor, and can only fit records, no boxsets

Yosuke Yamashita
• Chiasma (1975): The Radical. Captures the early Yamashita Trio at full free-jazz intensity—physical, confrontational, and structured.

• Plays Gershwin (1989): The Bridge. Yamashita reconciles with the American songbook on his own terms. This album acts as the pivot, moving from radical abstraction into a disciplined, swinging dialogue with jazz tradition.

• Sakura (1990): The Synthesis. A turn toward restraint and lyricism, shaped by Japanese aesthetics of space and silence. Though his physical piano playing is very much evident here too. His Yurigako ( song no 2) has the lyricism and the melody that would reveal to initiates into jazz , the beauty of this genre , resplendent like Japanese cherry blossoms .

Together, these trace the arc of Yosuke Yamashita’s musical journey , from the "piano-hammer" of his youth to the "brush-stroke" of his maturity.
