One Tuesday in New York, back in 1977, Japanese bassists Takashi Mizuhashi and Teruo Nakamura walked into a studio to jam with… Herbie Hancock! This album is the result of that session. Awesome playing all around, with a gorgeous take on Cantaloupe Island as well.
What a brilliant record this is! Falls under 'free jazz' but yet so accessible and groovy. That title refers to the Dogon people of Mali, and A.D. is short for 'adaptive dance'. Do give this a listen, one of my all time favourite albums.
First released 26 years ago, this was my introduction to Nu Jazz; and I was hooked from the start.
Tourist is an amazing melange of sounds: cool samples of Marlena Shaw, John Lee Hooker and Miles Davis, the gorgeous guitar musings of Ernest Ranglin, electronic and acoustic instruments.
For the audiophiles here, the vinyl outperforms the original CD; a sonic spectacular. Just make sure you get the 2018 release.
