When I am connecting an optical cable from digital set top box to the 3300 AVR there is always an audio droupout of 2 seconds once in 10 or 15 minutes. Tried changing the cable but still the audio droupout is there. It is just like I hit the mute button for a second or two. There is not any problem with the Video. Tried resetting the set top box but still the audio droupout is there for couple of seconds in every channel. Any help to solve this would be greatly appreciated.

If you have another source with an optical out (like DVD or a media player) try connecting it. If that also has the same issue then your AVR is the culprit, if that plays then the set top box is the culprit. This is assuming both the cable you tried is fine. Also, check while connecting if the cable is bent too many times or bent in right angles or anything, sometimes in optical this causes a momentary loss of signal.

Thank You Ram. As you mentioned the cable was bent towards right angle from the set top box. After straightening that there was no problem.

Its not necessary it is broken if it works fine. I had Cambrdige Audio 60$ optical cable that broke in 2 to 3 mishandling and I have a 3$ monoprice one which has been with me for 3+ years and has been abused enough and still going strong. So it depends on the cable quality.

afaik, there are two types - plastic and glass. Which one has less jitter and hence sounds better, I wish to know.

Yes, I had a feeling that the cheaper ones might be plastic. Would be interesting to hear from our professionals (networking or audio) about the pros and cons of this.

Given the fact that optical cables carry digital signals ,does the medium used to transmit the data from source to destination matter as long as 1s and 0s reaches the destination?

Paid around Rs.600/- for 1.5 meter cable. There were also cable for Rs.150/-. How do we find out the build quality? Both the 150 rupee and 600 rupees looked alike.
