TOE IN: TWEAK LAST, NOT FIRST
When setting up your speakers, start by finding the best position with them firing straight ahead. Focus only on placement - distance from walls, separation, and distance from the listening position. DO NOT attempt to adjust toe-in at this stage.
Once the placement sounds balanced and coherent, begin toeing in gradually, about 5 degrees at a time, until the imaging locks in and the sound feels right to you. There is no universal rule for toe-in. Some speakers benefit from it, others don’t.
For speakers with wide horizontal dispersion, it might seem that toe-in is unnecessary. But that same dispersion can result in stronger sidewall reflections, especially if your speakers are positioned close to the walls. In such cases, you have several options:
• Move the speakers closer together, away from the side walls
• Apply moderate toe-in to reduce early reflections
• Or consider treating the side walls at first reflection points
As with much in audio, there are many variables at play, so the key is to experiment thoughtfully. Use toe-in as a fine-tuning tool, not a starting point.
