We spend hours fine-tuning speaker placement, obsessing over toe-in angles and sweet spots, but many of us overlook the very foundation our amplifiers rest on.
Amplifiers, especially tube or Class A designs, are sensitive to vibration and microphonic feedback. Placing them on light racks, wobbly shelves, or open-frame tables can blur detail, collapse imaging, or add a slight “haze” to the presentation.
Try placing your amp on a dense, stable surface. A steel plate, a butcher block , or even a constrained layer damping platform. The goal isn’t to “decouple” it like a turntable, but to anchor it. Mass loading drains vibrational energy and helps the amp deliver sound with greater authority, clarity, and control.
There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but this is one area where thoughtful experimentation can pay off. If you’ve nailed your speaker placement, it might be time to look under your amp.
