Guys,

Is it a good idea to buy a AV receiver from HK and bring with one self for personal use? How much duty would it attract? I will be flying in to Kolkata airport. How bad or good is the customs there?

I am looking at Denon X2000. Hong Kong price is around 4750 HKD (Rs 38K INR, approx). It also weighs close to 10 kgs :-(

Kind regards,

John

Hi John

All the major brands are available in India...why do you want to carry the weight and also attract unnecessary customs...most important...why lose out on warranty?

Would suggest you check in and around your location for possible Home Theatre or Audio dealers who would sell decent AVRs...I am sure a simple google search would yield some delaer names with whom you can check...go window shopping to other dealers to audition other brands to make up your mind....

Before you strike a deal....read available reviews and see videos posted over the internet...alternatively you can list down the brands and models of AVRs you have shortlisted for us HFV members to guide you.....end of the day it depends on what appeals to you and your budget....HongKong like Singapore is expensive for electronics...

Thanks Efernand

Just was comparing prices of models. For example, Denon X2000 is around 50K in India and around 36K in Hong Kong. Only the weight is a factor. I think one is allowed up to 35K worth goods apart from 2 liters of booze! (and a laptop).

Cheers!

John, unfortunately customs officials charge customs based on India price rather than whatever receipt you can show. So it will be charged as a 50k item and not 35k
Secondly, with AVRs becoming more and more complex, it is unwise to not consider warranty. A 15k saving seems a lot, but if you are stuck with a lemon, you may have to spend multiple times that amount to get your AVR working

I hv a Yamaha avr from US working for past 10yr and a Denon avr since 4yrs working fine. You may take the decision of bringing from hong kong. You may get away from customs if hand carried by paying a nominal amount. A friend who carried mine from the US paid about 2.5k
