Folks:

Have anyone recently brought AV receiver from US? Do you carry it in checked in baggage?

How to deal with customs in India?

Have got two of my receivers frm US though not recently. Carried by my friends in their hand baggage but not sure if the rules permit now. Customs was abt Rs max 2k. If you plan to get one, do get the 220v one

Hi lostincrowd

US is known to be cheaper in electronics and hence most of us would love to get stuff from there. Recently airlines have changed some rules about hand baggage size and weight....you may want to check this...also warranty is important and not forgetting the great custom officers who want to make a quick buck.

Advice is to check for AVRs available in India which suit your taste and requirements in terms of performance, connectivity etc etc and decide. Most models are here in India with and without warranty.....lot of Home Theatre dealers...I am sure you would be able to get a certain model cheaper somewhere.

You can also get a 110 volt one and use a good step-down transformer like from Maxxine. Many forum members do that, and it works fine.

Customs, get it in checked-in. Some members have not been asked questions.

Tip: Don't bring the original packing, pack it with some old packing material and say it is an old one.

Yup. You could get the 110v with a stepdown here - that's is what I would do.
For receivers you can try accesories4less.com. They have great deals on refurbished ones. My suggestion would be to ask someone to carry the smaller slimline ones. The denon s are big and would take most space. Also take note that customs is applied on the indian price and not basis the invoice.

Has anyone carried an AVR in checked baggage?

Airlines have become very strict with carry on weight limits these days.
