here's a deal: What about a diy subwoofer which can blow svs and hsu out of the water?

Any one heard of SEAS L26ROY aluminium cone long throw subwoofer?

Well i heard it last week at a friends place in malaysia... trust me this one is blooody awwsome
its so clean , so buttery , and hits pretty low.
google it for its specifications and u ll find some marv designs based on this driver
So my friend bought this driver from singapore and i have managed to work getting these drivers shipped through a network and the landed price inclusive of everything for this driver come around to be 19700 INR( only if we buy six drivers togther)

this driver retails for USD228 and because this is extremely heavy so the shipping is around USD155 per Driver and then 28% customs thats roughly 24000INR

so if any one likes this deal and the designs based on this seas Sub PM me we have a months time till 28th dec for this price

and those of you who like the passive radiator design the passive radiator for this will cost 7200 per piece all inclusive

so we need six people to get this driver at 19700

the woodwork for this driver would not be more than 5000 INR and a 250W rms Subwoofer amp can easily power this because this has a very high sensitivity

so i think the total cost of this project shouldnt be more than 32000 INR .

Yes I have seen this design, there are loads of other , the linkwitz riley group are using this driver in their Orion series too.
 
Hi spirovious , I am able to get these cheap by importing these through people who are into the business of getting clothes into India and plus there is a dealer discount as well . Getting these through madisound wouldn't be cheap because firstly we would need 10 people and then bear a high shipping cost and then customs ;-).
 
a lot of designs are possible with this driver once I get it I LL replace it in my Yamaha Down firing sub and check the response
 
problem with down firing a sub which is not meant for that is not with the response, the issue will be the cone sag over a preiod of time if the cone is heavy.

Be careful about down firing subs. The suspension can sag with time and its max output capability will fall. There was some formula for this. It would tell you how much it would sag using the driver properties. However I would say don't do it. I have several drivers that haven't been used a long time. 6 inch, 8 inch , 12 inch and 15 inches. They have been stored facing up and all have sagged ! It cannot be corrected again as the suspension has stretched and it cannot be compressed back to shape.
Some drivers have very stiff suspensions and are meant for down firing. You should check the driver details to determine this.

I wanted to build the sand filled GR Research sub for a long time which I believe is one of the best VFM for the front firing. But the cost of importing from US is a downer especially for the sub kit taking into consideration the total shipping weight of the package. If cost permits then I would definitely attempt the sand filled one which is a sealed sub especially for music :)

I first came across it in articles about GA Briggs speakers ( 60's). But I think it could be much older than that. The attempt was to deaden the panels which it does very well. My first speakers at home ( with 12 inch drivers) had a sand filled front baffle built in Chennai in the early 70's ! The seller himself used Wharfedale speakers ( Dovedale 3's !) built with sand filled panels. It did sound great ! ( with Thorens TD124 + 12inch SME arm+ V-15 + Truvox valve amp )

Somehow there seemed to be magic in the air those days. Must be an effect of being 'young' ! :)

I'm making it. The inner box is made. Yet to make the outer box. Getting river sand is proving to be difficult here.

Great captain, let us know your views once the build is completed and you get a chance to hear in a detailed way.
 
I have used this subwoofer in 2011-12. I remember using a sealed box (I did not need the last octave) called the EL-ROY. Maybe you guys can google that.

Outside of this woofer I have used several woofers from Audio Concepts (DV12), Peerless (DK - 831727), JBL (2235 and 2245), etc. I would urge you guys to consider TC Sounds as well. Just my 2 cents.
