Getting bore in the office so I thought of sharing my feeling about Open Baffle (OB) speakers that I made and the beauty of it (perceptible by ear only).

I have experience of an OB speaker for 2 or 3 months now. It has changed my perception of sound imaging a lot.

Open baffle speakers have space behind them till the wall facing the listener.
In my limited hearing space, I felt that 3 dimensional space between speakers and the walls is the canvas for the speaker to make the soundscape.

The moment OB speakers throw sounds to me andto the wall in front of me, sounds seem to take the stage in front of me and start a ballet. Depending on the source's sound design, that dance of the sounds is so captivating that I smile in myself most of the time when I listen to my OB. The difference in 3D feel is like the same as in a 2D movie and a 3D movie.

I have not listened all my CDs through those speakers yet, most of the CDs are in Kolkata only:sad:. Some few CDs (Indian Ocean, Silk route, Dohar - a Bengali band, Pink Floyd) that I have here create such a soundscape (or imaging whatever you call it) that is impossible to dislike. The illusion is superb.
Those same CDs make a 2D image on the plane of the box speakers whenever I play them through. I have tried moving my box speakers away from wall (not by 3 feet though like OBs) but the plane remain fixed with the speakers. those box speakers sometimes disappear but still fail to make a 3D image.

That I think is the most beautiful gift from an OB speaker.

Plus, there is bass, bass blast like a natural sound. A foot pedal hitting a drum can be realized in my OB, which I can't do with my cabinet seakers. I am not familiar with words that can express sounds correctly to an audiophile, so bear me. Bass from OB is clear, precise, not lean, not heavy. Listening it is like being able to identify different sounds produced by beating a table with your bare hand but having different kind and thickness of cloths on top of the table. Bass is there, but not over encompassing mid. Bass is true bass.
Ofcourse my cabinet speakers are not of abosolute quality but they are quite famous in their own countries to start with. Where as my OB is made of drivers from Ahuja and are actually intended for public anouncements. Performance per investment is too good for OB and that is another advantage but I will stick to beauty of it only for now.

I think, beauty of OB shines the most in mid. Identifying a cymbal location in a blank space is a wonderful thing but identifying a vocalist standing just by the side of the cymbal or say a bass guitar but a little up front while he or she is breathing in is something different. And how about realising that she/he is actually not present in front of you if you open your eyes? It is that real for the mid. Older sound recording of Ghazals proved more captivating. Listen to "Aaj Jaane ki zid na karo" by Farida Khanam recorded live through an OB, you will understand.

I would love to read experiences of other OB users. Friends here are listening OBs for a longer period than me...reading their feelings will be encouraging for me.

For friends who haven't yet listened music through an OB system, I request earnestly to do so.

:)Thanks Square_wave.

I wrote this as I could not control those bubbles of happiness in listening an OB.

Read your review from your link. thanks for that as I enjoyed your write up a lot and the tale of tail too.

I moved to Martin Logan electrostats from there and now i have the Rethm Saadhanas.

Hi Square wave

The Audio Artistry are better speakers than the Rethm Saadhanas. They are the best i have owned. Just took up too much space. With 2 growing children had to settle for a smaller system. Also i like to try various types of speakers.

Reading you all, I am so happy to show my wife that there are more people like me...I am not alone.
Infact, I have just started....

Another two (advantages) of OBs are

1) wider sound stage than their speaker distances

2) use room effect to the advantage. The front wall (of the listener) actually become the end of the stage for the speakers. OBs use reflection off the front wall in its advantage. You have to do some trials to get the sweet spot.

Right now I am listening to two albums of Indian Ocean, Black Friday and Desert rain in them. I have listened live performance of Indian Ocean and the Desert Rain resembles live performance (at least the MP3 files that I have does so).

I am using open baffles since some time now. Experimented with some other cabinet speakers but came back to OBs again.

It is not only OB for me but in addition, the full ranger is fed full signal without any crossover. The tweeter just has a capacitor to cut frequencies below 8Khz. There is no separate bass driver/subwoofer.
So from 50Hz to 8Khz, it is the full ranger playing without crossover.
Well, it is difficult to describe in the way Sumanta has described but I definitely get "satisfying/content feel" when I listen to them. I naturally close my eyes and keep on listening. It is involving sound. They are overall good sounding but too good at percussion instruments and vocals. Guitar,my favourite instrument sounds very natural. Since I used to play guitar and drums, I know how these instruments sound naturally without any electrical amplification.

Few months back, after reading reviews about any speaker on net, I would always imagine that I should try/buy it. Now a days I don't feel that way.
My chain at present is : HP mini netbook as source>> USB out>> Purepiper DAC >> Marantz PM 6002 amp>> OBs.

I am planning to upgrade tweeters. I am using Showa piezos (Rs. 50 each) right now but that is not because they sounds poor. It does good job for frequencies above 8Khz. In fact my friends were amazed by the way higher frequencies are produced. It is just an itch to try something new.

I want to try tube amplifier now. I even spoke to Viren Bakshi today. Even the cheapest amp is for 24K. I have not heard good tube sound anytime except once and the speakers paired to that amp were not great. So I am not sure whether to take that plunge or no.

is the capacitor something you put in place or is that part of the driver i can buy? if you did, could you please tell me the process?

could you please give me the dealer contact info. for the drivers?

also i read elsewhere that you spent 7k or 9k just for wood work that too for OBs, could you please tell me if its normal for any DIY cabinet build or was something special in your build?

Yuvaraki,
I paid 1800/- for the carpenter job plus soldering of the speaker connection for my first OB design (including material). I had used MDF sheets.

It is best if you go out and talk to a carpenter for his price including material.

Good, solid and strong OB can cost you more than a cabinet as it will be custom built from the carpenter's point of view.

Yuvaraki,
I got the capacitor as a gift from Ahuja guys. They said they use this capacitor with the full ranger and work well always.
I am happy since then.

@ Sumanta:Capacitor on full range seems bit odd. Capacitor is high pass filter. Whyw ould someone put capacitor on full ranger? Can you please tell me the value of the cap? @ Yuvaraki, Ahuja products are available all over india. The distributor list is there on their website. You will have to read basics of passive crossover before you embark on DIY journey. I used the12volt.com for this. The site is for car audio but the basics hold good for any passive crossover. Regarding woodwork, I used best quality plywood and work was bit tricky as I needed something where no two walls were allowed to be parallel to each other. May be that is the reason why the cosy was high.

@Jaudere, I think it was a capacitor suggested by the worker there in Ahuja shop. I think I gave you the number earlier, but I can read it and give you again (beauty of the open baffle :-)). Capacitor was in between the full ranger and the tweeter to restrict sounds below a certain frequency.

Got it. Your capacitor is working as 1st order high pass filter for the tweeter while full ranger is without any filter. This is same as mine. I tried 10 microF cap yesterday. It made speakers to harsh. So back on 4.7 mf.

Purchase the Audiolab 6000A Integrated Amplifier at a special offer price.
