I think that with the whole new range of stand alone audio and video players coming into the market this is slowly changing. Here in the US Ipods are very popular, and a lot of music is sold through the Apple Store. Amazon also offers tracks to download music. I understand that this has not reached critical mass in India yet, and can I suppose be compared with ebooks like Kindle.

>A CD can store any computer file as a data file. But, it will have limited use outside the >computer and OS on which it was created. A WAV file, for example, cannot be played on most CD and DVD players, but can be played on any Windows OS machine. Most modern players can play MP3, though.

The use of computers as a source has not yet gained enough popularity for music to be recorded and sold in computer based formats. Thus you will continue to see the sale of original music only in Redbook CD formats.

I agree George. My only grouse is as follows:

All you need to make a good player is a hard disk, a good DAC chip, a tiny OS, and the necessary application software. Hand held players are a compromise because of the space and the functionality that they provide. To a certain extent, audiophile HD based players are emerging that can rip and play music well. On the other hand you have the media players that can play anything but have limited SQ capabilities. And these players keep changing on a constant basis.

Why the hell can all these capabilities not be combined into a good hardware that can do everything well? And one that does no have obsolescence as a necessary feature built in?

That is the reason I have decided to spend a little money and make a HTPC for myself, followed by an audio player separately. I would be safe from digital obsolescence for five or six years at least.

Cheers

Depends more on the equipment actually, higher you go (in quality) more audiable the difference is ......

Thats 100% true. I have noticed no difference when played on a very average setup but the difference becomes audible as you start comparing on true high end equipments.I tried comparing with a Rotel 971 Amplifier connected to a Wharfedale Diamond 8 Series and the difference was minimal at high bitrates.

I am sure this wont be the case when played back on a reference series amp like Audio Research and Wilson Speakers.:D
