Hi all,

I've been reading the posts on this forum for a while now,
but this is my first thread here.

The thing is I'm looking to get a new 22/23/24" monitor
and I'm not sure if I should get a LCD/LED TV and
use it as a monitor...

Or I should get a monitor, and use it as a TV with the help
of a TV Tuner card?

The primary purpose is of a monitor. I'm just hoping I can
also use it as a TV for a while to avoid having to buy two
things at once.

My budget for the TV is between Rs 15,000-20,000.

Two models I have been looking at are:

a) Samsung 23" P2370MS LCD LED Monitor TV
b) Samsung 23" S23A300B LED Monitor

I'm hoping you can advise if these are any good,
or any other good model.

If it's a TV, I'd love for it to be easily connectable to my
laptop.

Look forward to your suggestions,

Thanks.

Hi kingkong,

I'm using DELL U2412M, it's an Ultrasharp series from DELL and equipped with an IPS panel.

Main features are:-

Screen size: 24"
Aspect Ratio 16:10
Max res: 1920x1200
Panel: e-IPS
Backlight Technology: W-LED
Dynamic Contrast Ratio: 2,000,000:1
USB: Two USB port at left side

I don't use it as a TV but one can connect it to TV tuner card and can enjoy the TV viewing :)

One thing you might not like if you want to use it as TV is it doesn't has an HDMI port

The only Monitor now with IPS panel with 16:10 Aspect Ratio. :eek:hyeah:

I bought it at 20,000/- including shipping 2 months back from SMC International, they provide good delivery.

One more thing I want to mention, the colors are incredible on this monitor
:)

Hope this helps
Regards
Dinesh

The monitor suggested by madhavk8 is just perfect specially if you more inclined towards TV viewing. Its a nice buy.

Contrast ratio not as good as other monitors: 640:1 - It has a TN panel, so viewing angles could affect but for TV viewing its best BIG size and economical cost. :clapping:

As I'm using DEll IPS just for a reason as I'm a Design professional so have to deal with more color accuracy. :)

Hi Dinesh,

The model you stated seems to be available for just Rs 17,900 now:
Dell Ultra Sharp U2412M 24" Monitor

I see that this model has a response time of 8ms.
For most monitors it's like 5ms, right?

Will we see any major difference because of this?

Hi,

Thanks for your recommendation.

Tried to search for this model on ebay. It showed the price as Rs 29,000!

But that's an imported item. I guess locally it will be priced around Rs 20k liek you said.

I see that this monitor has fewer connectivity options. Will that be an issue?

Secondly, I've heard that the lifespan of a monitor decreases if we use it as a TV. Is this true?

Buy Samsung 27 inch LED monitor which also has hdmi input so you can use HD DTH connection and use as a tv. It costs around 17-18k street price but mrp is 20k. Samsung gives best colors and performance among other led monitors.

Enjoy the smarter monitor with intelligent eco solutions. - S27A550H - LED Monitor - Monitor | SAMSUNG

You dont even need a tv tuner card, just plug in a hd dth through hdmi.

Hi,

Thanks for all your inputs so far.

Can you clarify these 2 things also:

a) I see that the Samsung monitor has fewer connectivity options. Will that be an issue?

b) Secondly, I've heard that the lifespan of a monitor decreases if we use it as a TV. Is this true?

Many thanks.

dude if size isin't a major issue and you can wall mount.. why not pick up a toshiba. they were selling 32in for around 18-19k some time back.. it will be a full fleged tv and serve a lot better as a monitor.. though you gotta keep some distance so you dont damage your eyes.

can you give the exact model number?

I have been using a Samsung B2230 1920x1080 FULL HD monitor as a TV for some time now. Cost me Rs.8000.It has DVI input. No HDMI.
But HD movies played through laptop with even VGA cable look spectacular.

For TV I use Zebronics external tuner - about Rs1200. Its OK for SD content on local cable.Have not tried with set top box/DTH.

It might also be a good idea and get those with inbuilt tuner for a few thousand more for simplicity.

Thanks for your input.

I see that price increases rapidly as we move beyond 22".

But is paying Rs 18k for a 27" monitor worth it, as compared
to Rs 8k for a 22"?

Does it make a BIG difference? The extra 5 inches?

Go to a mall or a big electronics showroom. They have TVs of all sizes. See & decide for yourself.

I have Samsung B2230 connected to Tatasky HD via DVI. It looks great except for the poor viewing angles (anyways I never view it other than directly in front of it).

Ontherocks, how do you connect the DVI to HD set top box? Do you use a DVI to HDMI converter cable or the DVI can plug into set top box cable directly? Are other options to connect to the STB?

Planning to get a DTH / local STB

Did you find diff b/w SD STB and HD STB on this 22" screen? Its surprising, even if its a FULL HD screen

So do you all finally say it's better to get a monitor and use it as a TV also,
rather than getting a TV that can be connected to the computer too?

If you have an HD STB, connection is really simple. Just get a DVI to HDMI adapter or cable.

If you have an SD STB, TV tuner card is the only option with this particular monitor.

With an HD STB you also get SD channels.
SD channels look good, HD channels look excellent.

Well, if your budget permits, always go for bigger size. No matter how big is your screen, you will tend to look for bigger. Happened with me when I got my sammy 2243nwx 3 years before. That time it was biggest reasonable with touch sensitive buttons but now looks small.

I'd still love to get an answer to this...

Majority here seem to be in favour of getting a monitor
and using it as a TV too instead of the other way round.

And I'd just like to know the reasoning behind this.

Thanks all.
