The tweeter on one of my Dali Ikon 1 bookeshelves seems to have blown. Noticed this over the last couple of days. What are the reasons that could happen. Sometime last week, did have the amp volume turned up when the system started and it was quite loud. Could that cause the damage? Using a stabilizer so dont think it was any spikes.

How and where do I get it repaired?

Thanks for your help.

I think tweeter gets damaged due to low wattage amplifiers. This is because when you increase the volume to drive the speaker you are also increasing the distortion and send spikes, impulses to the tweeter. These impulses are the reason for damaging the tweeters. If the cross-over is first order even more dangerous for the tweeters.

Repair ? .. Out of the Question

Replace .. see below

DALI Ikon1 ribbon & soft dome tweeter, PAIR, neodymium | eBay

One New Pair DALI IKON 1 Hybrid Tweeter Ribbon & Soft Dome | eBay

buy and get it. Then replace.

Good luck pal :)

And get a bigger amp.

You'll never risk such mishaps with a bigger amp, such things happen when the amp "clips", causing severe distortions to hit delicate voice-coils of tweeters. Plus as Hari says, if they're on 1st order config, its a straight clean path to THaT voice-coil.

With a larger amp, it just wouldn't clip so pre-maturely.

Eventually - it would clip if & when you really pound on the volume but by then, it would have probably destroyed your speaker & your ears. :ohyeah:

But .. buy the spares are restore the speaker or else you're left with a limping stereo pair .. :licklips:

Thanks for the replies, guys. Quite some information there for me to digest and read up over the next few days :) The gist I got is that I need to spend atleast $100 to get it fixed. Which means my pocket money for the next couple of months is gone!!

I have been using it with a NAD 302. Over last week, I have been trying out thatguy's Arcam A28 and Behringer A500. Not sure if it is an amp specific problem. Once when I turned it on, the volume knob on the amp was turned up all the way which really made the speakers scream. And yeah, my ears almost gave way too. Guess that is what screwed it up. Not sure which Amp was connected at that point.

Before I order the tweeters, a noob question : Would it be the the tweeter that is damaged or some other circuitry inside the speaker.

Problem may be due to :
1. Running the speakers with low wattage amps at higher amplificaton.
2. Running the speakers at higher decibels in treble zone i.e keeping the treble kob full and hearing at higher volumes for long hours which will burn the coil.
3. Mis alignment of Ribbon part of tweeter.
4. loose / lost connection as the connectors are press type.

Before you decide it better to check it up with any good speaker repairer locally in your presence. As far as my city is concerned, vectors, as I posted earlier, deals with dali, its spares and also have the repairng facility available with them.

The NAD 302 that you use is a genuine made in uk product from Apr '93 ~ Dec '96. It is rated at 25 watts per channel at 8 ohms with a generous headroom and will clip at 40 watts per channel.

The Dali Ikon 1 is a 86 dB sensitivity speaker of 6 ohms nominal impedance and can work well with 25 watt to 100 watt amplifiers.

The NAD 302 is pretty much on the lower side of the scale but in a small room its fine.

The Arcam A28 is a 75 watts per ch amp at 8 ohms & 130 watts at 4 ohms. This is more like a perfect match with your Ikon 1.

The behringer A500 is a Pro audio amplifier typically meant for professional audio applications like studios. Its rated at 125 watt per channel at 8 ohms & 175 watt per channel at 4 ohms and also can be used with the Dali Ikon 1 BUT "with caution".

IMO - I would replace the defective tweeter assembly & get the Arcam A28. They're a great match.

Hopefully i am not guilty of a grave crime.

How did this work out ? Could you in fact get a replacement tweeter and get it fixed to sort out your problem. And could you share how painful was it - logistically and fiscally

ciao
