Dear All

I want to ask a basic question.

When we are playing Blue ray material in a BD player the video o/p is 1080p so the upscaling function of a av receiver is not required.

Further, I presume that all the BD players must be able to output digital audio streams for the AV receiver to decode.

So if we buy a low cost BD player will the same be suitable instead of going for a high cost BD player.

If you have good AVR with all HD decoder,You can go for cheap BDp which with good PQ.
All decoding will be done by AVR.(HDMI connection is enough)

Even if you are doing all the audio decoding on the AVR, a better BD player will feed the AVR with better (jitter-free) input so the overall quality will be better. Same goes for video. The costlier BD players are costly for a reason :)

My question still remains.

Agreed they are costly for a reason. Most of the cost goes towards better audio circuitry, better upscaling of DVD material etc.

If I am not going to use the BDP as a DVD source and AVR should handle all the audio decoding then the PQ in the different players should be more or less equal as BDs give a 1080p picture.

Would appreciate some info regarding the same from the experts

You are absolutely right here that in case if you use the native resolution of the Blu Ray Disk i.e 1080P then all the players should output the same quality of the Picture, and to justify this point I will raise the case of PS3 which is very popular with us for its varsitality for both Movie watching as well as Game playing, and almost everyone believes that unless and untill you have a big enough display to pinpoint its shortcomings in terms of picture noise in comparison with a dedicated Blu Ray player which has better Power supply and seperate circuit for both audio and Video decoding, its very hard to fault.

So an expensive Blu Ray player also has the capability of altering the Picture performance of the Blu Ray movie played through it and its because of the upscaling chip used in it. For eq: my Oppo BDP 83 lets me further enhance the picture even if I am playing the Blu Ray disk to adjust the picture according to my liking. This difference is more evedent in case of DVD playbacck from a cheaper Blu Ray player in comparison with the likes of Oppo or Marantz.

But you are watching the Blue ray with a resolution of 1080p. How do you upscale that ??.

I agree that the upscaling issue would manifest itself in the dvd playback but i think the BD players which are currently available shall serve me the same purpose if i use it for only Blue ray playback.

Recently Sanjay0864 had stated that the Panasonic he was trying to sell and the Oppo 83 had the same video output in case of Blue Ray playback.

PS. I have seen computer screens sporting panels which support more than 1080p.

i believe u are right about the the 1080p PQ
i too did a lot of reading on this topic in other forums like avforums and avsfourms. it is believed that the PQ across all BD player is more or less the same.
i had a brief conversation with the oppo people on the phone when i was asking them the difference between bdp 80 and bdp 83 strictly in bluray playback. they said the PQ and the SQ(via hdmi) is exactly the same in the two player as the vrs anchorbay chip does not touch the native 1080p signal.

vrs anchorbay chip does not touch the native 1080p signal.

The user can use the pure direct function to get native 1080p signal.

But acoording to the Anchor bay site Anchor Bay VRS Technologies, the chip does a lot more than just upscaling. If u have an AVR with onboard Anchorbay chip then its better to skip the same on a bluray player and would make sence to buy a less costly player

ABT 2010 Video Processing Chip as used by oppo 83/others

"The ABT2010 video processing chip features Anchor Bay's Video Reference Series(TM) (VRS(TM)) 10-bit Precision Video Scaling(TM) and Precision Deinterlacing(TM), as well as Anchor Bay's patented Progressive Re-Processing (PReP(TM)), a breakthrough technology that improves poor picture quality caused by other deinterlacers. The chip also provides Mosquito Noise Reduction, Detail and Edge Enhancement, Progressive Cadence Detection, AutoCUE-C(TM), Precision AV LipSync(TM), and supports HDMI 1.3 with Deep Color(TM) and xvYCC colorimetry capabilities, and allows all formats to be passed-through for maximum system design flexibility."

seems like it does do something more than just video upscaling

for example:-
(1) Anchor Bay's PReP technology can process 480p, 576p, 1080p/50, 1080p/60, and other formats by PReP technology.

(2)similarly Progressive Cadence Detection can be used with 480p, 576p, 720p and 1080p input signals.

The user can use the pure direct function to get native 1080p signal.

'Pure Direct' is a function of the AVR and not the DVD/BR player.

The 'Pure Direct' option is for two channel audio where the receiver receives and transmits the audio signal without any processing other than simple amplification. In most AVR's, when you choose Pure Direct, it shuts down all video processing as well display functions.

If you need to control the way video signals are sent, there are specific functions available in the DVD/BR player.

Cheers

just passing on the information i got from various websites and oppo itself

BD players have SOURCE DIRECT not PURE DIRECT

regards

I have also gone through the User Manual of Oppo and I find that there is a source direct option. This option when selected will use the BDP as a transport and leave all video processing to external video processor. It lists the various resolutions supported for each type of broadcast/source material.

Here it may be mentioned that this is only possible through HDMI.

I think this is a fantastic option. If the cheapo players have this option we can all buy these players and use external video processors if the need arises.
