Hi,

I got a WD HD Live media player recently. I was not aware of AV receivers before I got it. I realized it when I was unable to see 5.1 option on it. It has both HDMI v1.3 and Optical out.

Initially I thought of getting some Creative speakers for INR 4000 and use it with both my player and PC. But it seems I cannot do that without a AV receiver.

Could you please suggest me a cheap AV receiver or preferably audio only receiver? In case it comes with 5.1 speakers, it may add the cost. Total budget preferably speakers for INR 4000 and for receiver its INR 2000.

Regards,
HPrakash

IF you are looking to use the optical/hdmi out of the wd tv, I dont think there are any solutions at that budget.
An AVR which can decode HD audio over hdmi will cost 25k plus cost of speakers.
The cheapest option would be something like Logitech z5500 at 17k.

Thanks for the reply. But I am not looking for HD audio out. I just want DD & DTS out to 5.1. Any input on this?

Regards,
Hari Prakash.

hari prakash, Afaik, wd tv does not have 5.1 analog out. So if you have to get true 5.1 out you have to use digital out(optical) or hdmi. The z5500 is one of cheapest active speaker 5.1 packages which can take optical input and decode it.
Else you can just take two channel out from the stereo analog out of wd tv, but that wont give you actual 5.1.

Hi again,

I found these two, but not sure whether I found solutions or not.

1, HD Audio Rush 5.1 decoder from Competitive Gaming Audio - eBay (item 110531900690 end time Jun-10-10 18:59:37 PDT)

2, HDMI LPCM 7.1 5.1 Multi-Channel Audio Decoder Amplifier - eBay (item 260399039440 end time May-18-10 21:20:09 PDT)

These are from USA's ebay. hopefully I think I could find such things in Chennai, if you confirm me that they will work, by looking at the specifications.

As per the saying Americans has lot of options in the world.

Thanks and regards,
Hari Prakash.

Hari Prakash,

There are no audio receiver available for 2000/- which can decode DD and DTS..
Logitech Z5500 is cheapest and best solution for your problem..

However if you don't have budget for z5500..you can get cheap 5.1 active speaker system (philips or altec or logitech ) and enjoy pseudo 5.1 if you input your 2 channel analog out from your media player.. 2 channel sound will be distributed to 5.1 speakers..but it will not be real 5.1 experience.. :)

There is speaker package called MEPL ,with DTS & DD support and Optical and Co ax input.

It is cheaper than logitech but exact price and availabality unknown

See if you get some second hand Home Theater set .....

the link you posted hprakash also shows up for 85$ and any case u try to get it it will still cross above 110$ that any how comes to 6k also then you need 5.1 analog speakers.. thats gonna cost you some amount.. rather look for a used logi that u can bargain for 10k odd.. coz creative 5.1 in inspire is peice of crap.... dont even use creative even for free unless its megaworks or gigaworks series..

If you are using any LCD TV, you can try any soundbars from Polk Audio to Marantz. Marantz ES7001 seems to be very good soundbar with all built-in decoders and amplifier
