I am told by one of the salesperson that CD player having USB or Mp3 support has less sound quality compared to a dedicated CD player.he suggests to go only for a dedicted player capable of playing only CD's.Anyone having their thoughts on this please share.

Marantz 6004 Cd player has this USB and MP3 features which are quiet useful, but I wondering how does this affect the CD playback quality.

It doesn't affect and I can vouch for that as I've been using for past 3 months! But the player is bit bright sounding!compared to my previous cd 6002 and doesn't support ipod folder change through the remote but it supports apple lossless!the player is fab and if you have people in singapore get it from there for max 23k!

Hi
Is the cd playback brighter on 6004 than 6002 or just USB/Apple playback brighter than CD playback on 6004?

It may be due to extra jitter on usb interface if the latter.

I've played both uncompressed .wav files and CD alternately. Didn't find any loss of detail. I use iTunes for extracting audio from CD.

I've heard Denon CD 710AE, and prefer CD6004 over it.

@metalmickey: as you had suggested, i replaced the stock ICs with chord crimson plus, the difference is substantial with more detail in the lower freq. Thanks for the tip!

My opinion -

CD Player that plays only CDs has a transport that is meant to play only CDs and is better than the other kind and makes almost no noise.

CD players that play mp3 also, have transports that are very similar to cd-rom drives and they are not as good as dedicated cd-drives and are slightly noisy when compared to CD-only drives.

The difference is very minor but it is there.
This is what I have experienced and is my personal opinion.

If you can be happy with mp3 then you won't notice the difference in both the kinds of players. If you want to play only audio CDs then where is the point in looking at mp3 capability ?

My purpose is mostly CD playback, but MP3 capability also would also be handy.

I have this doubt because except marantz no other company is having this feature. Are they avoiding it because it compromises on the quality?

NAD cd players also play mp3 and they are quite good.

@gobble-the brightness is Only for cd playback!didn't notice much on ipod classic 160gb...
@sandeep-happy you valued my suggestion and happy listenin!...the chord ic's are worth the money!

Raz_737, slightly tangential suggestion here: you could get the CD/MP3 capable CD5004 for half the price of CD6004 and just hook up your Ipod/others directly to the amp as I have done using 3.5mm to RCA wire. Through the Ipod, play lossless files ONLY, and you are all set. Of course, if you have the money, you should get the CD6004. I believe (read somewhere), it bypasses the Ipod's internal circuitry and uses the player's DAC for better sound. Can't confirm this though! Cheers.

Cost is not a major concern in this case.I am worried if the MP3 capability reduces the CD transport quality while playing audio CD's.This applies to Marantz CD 5004 also.

I disagree here there is difference between the player has mp3 compatible also and the dedicated high end cd player. Understand the word dedicated, means at the same cost of mp3 compatible player or more. But only thing is the difference between them could be identified if your gears and accessories and acoustics are such. When you are upgrading one to one the percentage of upgrade percentage is low but the cost percentage is high. I also have 5004 player and ayon cd1s player. I have compared them both simultaneously. 5004 is better value for money comparing ayon cd1s. So when I play mp3 songs I use Ayon cd1s dac using a good co axial cable. So the gap is meagre. Enjoy according to your taste cheers

Slightly off-topic:
I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone, but when I connect to my Marantz CD6004 (via USB), I get a "Cant Connect" error.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions?
My previous phone was an iPhone 3GS and it worked just fine.

@op

Marantz CD6004 excels in all departments, keeping in mind cost to performance ratio.

If I am not wrong it's designed around the cirrus logic chip.

USB as transport is just too good, play wav files off USB you will keep aside the disc's.

Brightness or non brightness is ones personal preference, but this cdp is a excellent performer.

If you are open to higher budget then you should go for the Ki pearl cdp, which doubles As standalone dac in form of digital input.

I own a Ki pearl, outstanding design and engineering.

Let me be more specific here.Entry level CD players from Marantz and Cambrdige audio cost almost the same and the only key difference is Cambridge audio Cd player cant play MP3.I am thinking of buying one of this two players to be used as a CD transport and the only criteria for me here is the better CD transport.

There are two options for me:
1.If both have same CD transport capability then its better to go for Marantz because it also has MP3 support.
2.If the performance of Cambridge CD player as trasnport is better then I will choose that over Marantz and I am willing to sacrifice MP3 playback for quality.

Which one of this would be true? Did anybody perform a similar comparison like this?

I have this doubt because except marantz no other company is having this feature.

Raz, I am a little surprised by this comment. Depending on your budget you will find there are several brands offering this feature. I know Esoteric does as well. There is little doubt that a compressed format like MP3 is not as good as a standard redbook CD. But on the other hand using other digital formats, preferably lossless and uncompressed, sound very good and many say better than CDs.
Also, the basic USB interface is rather compromised, however, when one pays for good asynch USB inputs etc. you can get some excellent results.
