They have a role as clickbait (making us want to know more on the topic/subject).
They are usually a single sentence, shorter the better. It’s an art and a science.

The Art and Science of Headlines
I had three choices for a headline for this post. One that would go with what I truly wanted this post to be about, which is The Joy of Getting the Right Headline.
But these are confusing times.
I realised this when I came upon this:
