Hi,
I have just started building up my stereo system, with placing order for Marantz PM5004 from the HiFIMart, and will be buying the speakers over the weekend or next week. But I am confuesed about the source. I do not have a big CD collection, and have most of my music collection in mp3 (good & bad quality, will filter out bad sooner) and is on external HDDs and iPods. I am not sure what should I go for as a source. WDTV Live and other Media players I have heard does not have good SQ. Logitech Squeezebox has some good feedback from forum members, but for 2 reason I can not go ahead with it now : Firstly its out of my budget (currently, with money spent on Amp & Speakers) to buy it from India and secondly, some people suggest that even with it you need a DAC to get good SQ. Can anyone suggest about to go ahead with the source part ? Also, I have a question : If I have to put a DAC with Logitech SB, how would it compare with WDTV (or other media players) with DAC. With the Media players and DAC, I will save some money. I guess I'll loose on the good interface that Logitech SB has, but then its twice as costly as regular media players.

Please provide your inputs if you have any in this regard.

Thanks,
Rahul

Do you own a laptop that you can use for audio use for the time being? If yes, pick up a DAC with USB input and use that with the laptop for now. Later, get a better transport.

hi abhi_jollyguy,
From your signature it looks like you are using similar setup as the one you suggested, so its good that I am getting a tried and tested solution :)
Can you suggest a good DAC around 10k (or a little more also), if you have any information on that (I'll search the forum for more info).

Thanks,
Rahul

@Rahul

Hi, You should buy a good HD media player and an external DAC and connect both of them and start listening.

A DAC with HD Media Player will be better than Logitech SB Touch in sound quality.

Like in property purchase the mantra is "location, location and location; in audio it is source, source and source"

I have realised that no matter how expensive system you may have, everthing would be just a waste of time, efforts and money unless you don't have a quality recorded source CD/ loseless format.
