Customs duty/ penalty for used and old items.

Maybe you are right. It could have been read as dollars.
However at approximately Rs 40,000/- the customs duty is 1,05,282/-
That's impossible !
You can check out by going to the Indian government web site for duty calculation. You will need to find out the HS code for the item which is also listed elsewhere. I've never seen duty over about 40% for anything we generally buy.
Here it is about 2.6 times ( 260 % ) !!! It's isn't funny at all ! Beware. Better check EVERYTHING before using their services ! You don't want 'expensive surprises' later on.
Unless this is a mistake , looks like they are a ripoff !

Hi,
Needed to share some not so nice experience with customs.
I was looking online for an FM tuner, and my search led me to ebay.uk.

I found and old/ used Denon tuner for GBP 25, with shipping @ GBP 45 (total GBP 70). I was not able to get a good tuner on India sites, so i closed the deal.

About 40 days later i got a letter from Fedex that i had to pay adjudication fee for the same, and needed to provide authority letter, penalty letter, proof of purchase, explanation letter and some other documentation, which i managed to complete after much difficulty as i am petrified by this stuff.

1) Apparently i am not allowed to import used items!!
2) Anything which uses radiofrequency is a security risk item!!

I got the parcel after a lot more delay and i had to pay some 2k (~24% of Rs5600), about Rs 1400 for customs storage, and here comes Rs 15,000/- as penalty.

3) Penalty for importing used items and security risk item (FM tuner) is 15K!!

I asked if i could abandon the item as 18.5K for a used and paid for item was ridiculous, but Fedex guys said they paid the 15k on my behalf, and so have to take the item.

After some extensive discussion with Fedex customer care, including asking shipper to pay the 15K, they reluctantly accepted my request to abandon the item.

Still waiting, and hoping this is the last i hear about this transaction, and hoping it will be a good experience for others to learn from.

Thanks,

Sreekanth

Hi
I am facing same dilemma ,My friend purchased one used onkyo amp from ebay and after he returend to india using the item for more than 6 month I couriered it through DHL ,custom have raised fair value to 10k slapping 3K as Duty and 6k as penalty ,can i ask what will happen if we abandon the amp as the cost was only 30 and it doesnot worth spending extra 9K on the item.I am asking the question because you have also abandon the item,Thanks and waiting for you reply.Prashant

You need to have a Customs broker who can assist with the formalities and negotiate on your behalf. You can also meet the officials and represent yourself. For any high value item, don't leave it to the courier company to clear.

Best wishes
