If electrostatic speakers are basically vibrating membranes how come there aren't any speakers on the market that are strips of round electrostats in different sizes?

Is it not a functional form?

Interesting question there, corElement.
My two phooti Kaudiees as follows:-

ES panels from marques like Magnepan, Quad, Martin Logan and Cadence (India), to name a few, are a form of dipoles (read more open baffle than conventional electrodynamic open baffle speakers) for their part.

These are usually accompanied by a helper woofer for the low-mids and the LF, as they are by design not suited for those frequencies.

The longer/taller and narrower the panel, the more it acts like a vertical dipole line source.

This extract from wiki might help us grasp this better :-

QUOTE
1. Since many electrostatic speakers are tall and thin designs without an enclosure, they act as a vertical dipole line source. This makes for rather different acoustic behavior in rooms compared to conventional electrodynamic loudspeakers.

2. Generally speaking, a large-panel dipole radiator is more demanding of a proper physical placement within a room when compared to a conventional box speaker, but, once there, it is less likely to excite bad-sounding room resonances, and its direct-to-reflected sound ratio is higher by some 45 decibels. This in turn leads to more accurate stereo reproduction of recordings that contain proper stereo information and venue ambience.

3. Planar (flat) drivers tend to be very directional giving them good imaging qualities, on the condition that they have been carefully placed relative to the listener and the sound-reflecting surfaces in the room.

4. Curved panels have been built, making the placement requirements a bit less stringent, but sacrificing imaging precision somewhat.
UNQUOTE

Having quoted that, you can imagine what would happen if there were, as you said, speakers on the market that are strips of round electrostats in different sizes. Theoretically speaking, it would work as two hollow pillar-like cylinders that are made of ES panels but especially in the wake of point 4 above the stereo imaging precision would go for a toss.

Not only that, it would also lead to negation of all the positive aspects of an OB/dipole in addition to detrimental cancellation inside the hollow cylinder with no positive attributes thereto.

Flat ES Panels are as such, very expensive as we all know. A round one would be even more expensive to build and with nothing acoustically gained therefrom, it would obviously amount to professional hara-kiri on part of the designer, manufacturer and/or distrbutor(s).

@ All
Please do feel free to correct me if I am wrong. I am a tech-challenged guy of sorts, capable only of layman-like-understanding beyond a certain point. Therefore, have offered my two phooti kaudiees as such, just like a layman that I am. . . .

All the same,
Hope this helps.

No you put it down fairly well.

Based on that more thoughts arise in my mind where if there was a cylindrical one, the inside could be completely blocked off similar to es panels mounted on walls. Wonder what the result would be.

Looks like something out of a ridley scott movie.
Not entirely what i meant since they're multiple sheets but yes they are omnidirectional lol.

i heard these ( i dont remember.. but something that looked very very similar ) in Dubai at a high end audio shop about a year back.. good sound.. but i dont know..it did not tug my heart. Maybe i was overwhelmed by these.. maybe when i heard the prices.. mentally i turned off..

They are known to be very demanding speakers in that they have to be set up right. Lots of material available online. The MBL website has language options for English and Russian which gives you an idea on their target markets. At $250K plus you need Arab or Russian oligarch money to own them. For anyone wanting to know more the MBL North America website is a lot more easy to browse.

For those in Hyderabad, Audio People has a setup in place in their high end stereo room but they don't have the Radialstrahlers. They are picky about who they let into their high end room though.

Here's an interview with Jurgen Reiss of MBL from CES 2012.

Inspite of all that's been said and/or quoted, I daresay that I still choose to earnestly PROPOUND & maintain this

EVEN IF SOMEONE WERE TO SUCCEED IN RE-INVENTING THE WHEEL, IT WOULD STILL BE ROUND, No?:lol::lol:

Inspired by William Blake who once wrote as under:-

For man has closed himself up,
till he sees all things through narrow chinks of his cavern.
If the doors of perception were cleansed,
everything would appear to man as it is,
INFINITE.

Coincidentally BTW, that is reportedly how the rock band, THE DOORS
(of Jim Morrison fame:D:D:D) was inspired to name itself.

Where is my dear country cousin and (much more) well-read friend FM ajay124 ?? How I wish he would stumble upon this post of mine and in turn, take some time out and comment thereupon.
That, IMO, would truly be a RIOT and a half.:ohyeah::yahoo:

I do wonder why they are so picky about who they let into their high end room. Perhaps

* they don't want to spare time, venue and effort for folks
(other than the so-called 'upper-class Bourgeois')
who would want to audition their components w/o having the moolah to buy those, even if they sold all that they have incl themselves.
Thats fair enough, considering this
AGAR BAKRI GHAAS SE DOSTI KAR LEGI, TOH KHAAYEGI KYA?
(IF THE GOAT WERE TO BEFRIEND THE GRASS, WHAT WOULD IT EAT?

* they actually fear that folks with a (much) lesser amount of money to spend (read squander/splurge/throw away)
might actually be subscribing to and are members of the
'so-very-venerable-but-grossly-underestimated-common-sense-school-of-thought'

I would love to read and respond to comments on this post of mine but please do bear in mind that it its all in the lighter vein.;);):)
Therefore, any comment that is seen as otherwise shall constrain me to refrain from responding.

I mean neither offense nor harm to anyone. Please let it be taken as such, in the right spirit.
