Can these be repaired or are these toast.
I have asked for replacements from shopyourworld today, their reply is awaited, i will be posting their response for everyone's benefit.
Though the packaging was good i don't understand how these could get bent?
Can someone guide me if at all these can be repaired?
there are two places on the frame from where the bend has started as seen in the second last pic.
the top including the foam etc looks fine as seen in the last picture

any help will be welcome.

I don't think anything can be done. Yeah, you can straighten the frame and use it, but it will never be like the original spec. Ask for replacement from the shipping agent or the supplier.

I just wanna know that if i carefully straighten them out will it affect the sound quality, because other than the bend i find that the driver is absolutely fine

Very sad to tally. From the pics, it appears that only the frame is bent. Now that is what rests on the baffle and is the only point of contact. I don't know how much can it be straightened but if not well done, the seating on baffle would not be proper and that would affect the SQ.

Hope you get replacement. If not, you need to do a fair bit of tinkering to facilitate proper seating.

There should not be any doubt in this, you should demand a replacement, free of charge. ShopYourWorld should assume charges for this. Hopefully they have insurance to cover such incidents.

Yes only the frame is bent, i spoke to cranky on another forum and he advised to try and hammer it straight by mounting on a empty baffle, which i did , the driver's straightened out decently, a little distortion to the frame is there  Proper seating and sealing would solve the mounting problem. I am still not sure will there be an effect on the sound quality tho

What I meant by tinkering is, you need to take a wooden mallet (Ideal) and straighten all the bends by hitting them with moderate force resting it on a hard even surface. Handle small portions. Inspect after every 3-4 strokes or you end up over doing it. It is a very tricky and time consuming job.

Please check if your voice coil is centered if it doesnt hit the pole piece then the motor structure is unaffected .You probably got saved because it is a stamped steel frame . :)

can you please use a little clearer language i mean how do i go about checking that.

Im very sorry to let you know that there is not much you can do with those drivers. There are three things that could have happened:-

1)The frame is slightly bent. Its a cosmetic thing and not much of a concern. You could straighten the frame and use the drivers.

2)The basket too has bent slightly. If the basket is slightly bent in which case the voice coil will be able to move but will not be centered. You would be in a false sense of belief that the driver is fine, whereas the distortion would increase and Xmax would decrease as compared to the same undamaged driver. Looking at your the images you ve posted, it looks like the basket too has been affected.

2) The basket is bent so much that the voice coil touches the pole piece or top plate. In this case the driver is completely useless.

IMO you should follow firmly with shopyourworld for replacement rather than try to fix it.

Hope this helps,
Goldy

There is one simple way to check if the voice coil is touching anywhere.

Hold the driver by the magnet and keep the diaphragm close to your ear, hit the back of the magnet with your other hand(use the fleshy part at the base of your thumb). This will make the diaphragm oscillate and it will make a small boomy sound. If the voice coil is touching anywhere you will hear a whizzing or scraping sound instead. Check with an undamaged driver for the "reference boom" tone. If it's consistent across all your drivers, the motor structure is probably unaffected.

Be careful not to hit too hard as this will press the diaphragm against your ear.

Regds...

I tried to do what you said but i guess i cant make out the difference(read cant make out any wizz or boom)
probably because there is a non magnetic covering on the magnet of the driver so am not directly able to hit it.
isnt there a analytical method like testing with a multimeter or something ??

you have to check it by applying mild pressure with both the thumbs 180 deg apart best in the region near the dust cap seals.:)

if it goes in smoothly without making any noise it is ok if there are any squeaking noise or resistance or friction when you push it then the motor is affected.
Lets hope for the best .

regards ,
Somak
