If movie is your preference then select onkyo. for music and movie select denon. Onkyo 608 has more connectivity options compared to denon 1911. If you can wait a little, you can buy new models like 609 and 1912 with network capabilities.

Onkyo 608 is award winner ,THX certified & recommended for movies.
Decide speakers too for better system matching.

my basic usage currently will be for music
but i do want a stero amp as it leaves no room for expansion
pls tell me if the bose acoustimass 5 is good

If you read through the threads, you will know that there are not so many supporters for bose. You can get better audio systems for that price. Please read the threads about AVRs and amplifiers.

If you are purely looking for Music, IMO
A Satellite 2.1 is not going to cut it. try looking for Bookshelf Speakers l

What is your music preference ?

You did say u wanted an AVR primarily because of expansion.
Are u planning on at some point making it a 5.1 for movies as well ?

my music preference is classic, psychedelic rock, hard rock
ill also probably play a bit 70,s and 80's pop

i probably will expand to 5.1 later for movies

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
