Designing For Audio

2 points stand out for me
What is the difference for you between music lover and audiophile?

The first one can enjoy music over any format or system, even in the car. An audiophile is more concerned about sound and this gets him distracted from the music.

I am not into wire at all. I am using rather cheap interconnects in my system. I always recommend people not to spend much money on cables. The differences in cables are audible but rather unimportant for me. I get much bigger differences elsewhere in the system.

+1 with Arj, these lines hit me too!
I mean, I felt the same while trying set up my systems at times.

But what worries me now is to measure sound quality coming out of a music system.
But that should be a separate topic.

Actually these two lines are a summary of how it Should have ended on so many heated threads :)

Measuring overall sound quality is another rabbit hole as far as I am concerned..and since each ear is different in terms of what it hears and converts into a signal the brain can understand, the question is
1. What do you measure - ie what parameters really define Music (each person will give you his or her own view on what stands out for them..ranging from a sound stage to Tonality and microdynamics)

2. Where do you measure it - at the point the speaker reproduces it (to nullify the room), near the ear (to measure the room) or after the ear converts it to electrical pulses - the true hearing but different for each person

So i guess in the end the simplest is to hear and decide and take a risk on Psycho-acoustics ;)

to measure sound quality coming out of a music system.

You will find this topic being debated a lot on the Net and even before that came along. Some people tried to device special test signals that could give results that could (possibly) tell you how a system would sound like 'without actually listening to it playing music'.
That would mean a 'measured parameter ' that could tell you how something would sound like.

I haven't as yet seen such a measurement and from some other forums where this is again being debated right now , there hasn't been any solution yet.
Interesting to see that so much eludes us though many professionals have been working towards a solution for so long. Doesn't look like it will happen too soon.
But we needn't worry. That's for the lab. We have our ears to tell us what is good for us or not ! ;)

Excellent pieces of wisdom those 2 lines.

The pursuit can surely distract.

What is important wires or anything else depends on the location of the person in the knowledge ladder and also their disposition.
