Difference between Wi-Di and Wi Fi

Can anybody explain me the difference between Wi-Fi and WiDi technology? Are these technologies useful for a normal user?

Wifi is just a wireless Internet signal, normally created by attaching a wifi router to a wired ISP connection, so that you can access the Internet wirelessly on your laptop or mobile devices. It is certainly useful, cheap and extremely widespread.

WiDi is a proprietary Intel tech, Wireless Display. It allows one to wirelessly broadcast your laptop display on your TV. It requires a special CPU, wifi card in your laptop, a special widi receiver (like Netgear PTV1000) and free download software from Intel. It is fun, But expensive, and in my opinion, relatively unsuccessful.

Thankfully. Its been pretty successful for me There is considerate amount of lag ( 1/4 sec thereabouts) but otherwise. it works pretty well.
At your house as well my Laptop connected to your PTV1000 without any hiccups. It passed video and audio on the first go.

But overall
I feel it is Nextgear PTV1000 that is to be blamed though for any hiccups

Agree with you on the tech explanation, which is very precise. I am not sure about other brands, but the need for a WiDi receiver has been eliminated in LG Smart TV's as they have inbuilt WiDi. The best thing is, I have seen in person the LG TV mirror a Sony Viao's screen and it worked seamlessly without any hitches.

Is this suitable for normal Home Viewing of movies? Since you will always have to keep operating your laptop for controlling movie - play/pause/stop. Better we use media servers or media players where the control can happen with remote.

I think this tech is more aimed for office presentations and can help to eliminate a lot of wires on those meeting room tables.

I use the PTV1000 at home daily to play music on a vintage system. Quite handy.

Actually, you will not need a separate receiver in case both the devices - your laptop and your TV - are Wi Di enabled - you can connect seamlessly between the two devices. Unfortunately, Only two TV brands are Wi Di enabled as of now (AFAIK) - LG LM Series Smart TVs and Toshiba.

I have to give +1 to that. Wi Di in Smart TV's maybe good for corporate PPT's but can't be used for media viewing imho. :cheers:
