Hello guys, this I's my first time here and I hope this is the right place to start this thread. So here's my question: I'm building a. Htpc and I want a killer audio drive/format to go with it so what Is actually the best quality sound SACD, DVD AUDIO, or .FLAC audio format?

SACD and DVD-A cannot easily be ripped into a computer file in their formats; even if ripped not all media players will play them. Besides, music in these formats is hard to find. All normal CDs can be easily ripped as FLAC and FLAC is a lossless format that preserves the original bitstream.

IMHO there is really no comparison between SACD/DVD-A (which are more specialist formats) to FLAC, which is a universal lossless format. Go with FLAC.

as already mentioned it is not possible to "rip" an SACD/DVD-a directly....

Both DVD-audio and SACD have more or less same quality 24bit/192khz and support for multichannels.

as far as CD vs DVD-a/SACD is concerned, the sound of DVD-a/SACD is more natural and precise due to lesser compression. these are quite close to what human ears can appreciate

flac is just an audio format to store audio from the source without any loss of quality (though compresses the data to save space), it supports quality upto more than the definitions(24bit/192Khz) of DVD-audio/SACD...

Flac is CD quality as someone mentioned here, and DVD - A sounds a lil better, not much maybe 10 - 15 % more detail/clarity in the music. i've burned a few DVD's myself and can be done on your comp but these files are huge and its cumbersome job.

hi joey, what is your rest of setup to give us an idea how much an audiophile you are and whether we should recommend you $1000 or $10,000 or higher priced components.

FLAC is lossless & is equal to CD.

A good flac is far superior to CD. If you rip a CD to flac then obviously it will be like CD but I am talking of master tape kind of quality available on flac files for download from some records labels.

The standard red book audio cds use 16 bit PCM encoding with 44.1khz sampling rate. Do not use any other format when ripping these CDs to flac.

Download the latest version of EAC from its site. It has a simple wizard which you can use to set up for ripping regular red book audio CDs into 16 bit 44.1khz flac.

First of all Ipod does not support 24bit audio secondly CDs are recorded at 16bits of resolution upscaling it shall only increase file size not quality. You should rip the CD using ALAC (apple lossless audio codec) using iTunes, which is the best file format that an Ipod can handle.

There are few portable players which can handle High quality audio like HiFi-Man though it is VERY expensive !!
