what is the difference between a stereo2.0 and a upscaling 7.1 preamp and can the 7.1 preamp used for music without much appriciable loss of detail

For your room 7.1 is not nessacary. I would go with 5.1. Try to buy better speakers and better amps. If not you can postpone your surrounds for now and just by xpa 3. May be a year or six months later you can add XPA 2.

Most important, Pick the best speakers you can afford. All of the other things come next.

If you are a looking for a killer pre pro and can afford to wait for some time you might want to look at Marantz AV 7005 due in Oct 2010. I too was looking at UMC 1 at one point, but this one looks so promising
