Exclusive: Sun Direct HD Review with Pics.

Pray to God that HD becomes popular and is found in every home in our country so that we can get rid of the present horrible dth system......

Yeah we want HD Channels! But are we ready to pay money? Many DTH users even feel 300 Rs too much for more then 150 Channels:p

Thats true , we even feel that prices of blu ray videos are very high........:)

I just got my SUN HD today, The HD content is good. But i'm a little dissapointed and i'm already having signal problems. Hope they get this sorted soon.

This is almost impossible. > 90% of worldwide content is not HD and we have looottts of content. Even if HD channels were provided the content will only display in 4:3 unless we watch in one of the stretch modes

Yes SUN HD shows Discovery HD & NGC HD. The Quality is awesome and it is in 16:9 mode. Even the IPL matches are broadcasted in HD without any ads in 16:9 mode. Except SUN HD channel which looks like it's upscaled the rest of the channels are truly HD and the quality is really awesome.

Are you sure, which channel???

Of Course i'm sure, I watch it everyday ;)

There is a dedicated HD channel (No.950) for just the IPL matches, it comes live only during the matches. Rest of the time it just displays the IPL schedule for the day

Do we get HDMI cable along with STB?

I am about to receive sunHD package free with my Samsung PDP.
Tried searching in the sunHD website but could not figure out whether HDMI cable is offered with the STB.

True High Definition 1920x1080i Video & 'Dolby Digital 5.1' Audio
1. Discovery HD
2. National Geographic HD
3. Tamil HD Service (Music & Movie channel)
These 'three' HD channels have very good quality picture and sound.

True High Definition 1920x1080i Video & 'Stereo' Audio
1. IPL TV HD (Set MAX)
This has very good picture but very mediocre sound.

Standard Definition - Upscaled to 1920x1080i with 4:3 aspect ratio stretched to fill 16:9 screen & 'Mono' Audio
1. Sun TV
2. Colors
Both these channels are a total fraud and are not actually in HD. In actuality they are the regular standard definition channels, which have been upscaled to 1920x1080i. To make matters worse, they have stretched the SD 4:3 picture to fill a 16:9 screen, thereby making the picture totally distorted. First of all they should not legally be allowed to upscale channels and advertise or call them, as HD channels. Secondly, if they have to do this the least they can do is to let the picture retain the original 4:3 aspect ratio. So that atleast the picture is not distorted.

Even the IPL matches are broadcasted in HD without any ads in 16:9 mode.
In contradiction to what they claim this is not a totally 'ad free' coverage. I have seen quick, short ads of 'Karbon phones' and 'Blackberry phones'. They can get away with this nonsense only in India.

About the ads in the middle of overs, just wanted to mention that the broadcasters dont have any control. The IPL, in its infinite wisdom, has seen it fit to show the ads in the big screen at each ground. The camera simply focuses on it - there is nothing the broadcaster can do about it. It is such a pity.

I suppose you are right. But even then, I am sure the IPL can certainly do something about this. Also, since this infringes upon the rights of the local broadcasting companies, they surely have a right to object to this. Specially since, atleast in India it is Sony that is the official broadcaster and who are a partner in the HD broadcast on 'Sun Direct HD'.

PS: It is not a simple issue of the camera focusing on the instadia display during the ad, but it is being done in a totally planned manner with the audio for the ad being mixed in with the raw feed being provided to various broadcasters, i.e. 'Set MAX', 'Set MAX - IPL HD on Sun Direct HD' & cinema halls.

When it comes to the IPL, nothing is taboo. Everything that they do has to be right. They have become so big that nobody wins arguments against them now.

This practice of showing ads when the bowler walks back to his marks is just nothing short of reprehensible. But there it is - the IPL!

Totally agree with you. The IPL is the most greedy and short sighted sporting league in the world. Due to their myopic strategies, they are greedily implementaing policies which are quite akin to "killing the goose that lays the golden eggs". The least they can do is to look at other very successfull, specially American sporting leagues to learn how they very nicely balance the economic interests of the owners with the rights of the fans. But then again, thissis common to almost all aspects of our daily lifes, so why would the IPL be any different. After all titi s the same (similiar) people that are involved in decision making.

PS: The flourishing home video business of the 1980's, is a perfect case study of how overzealous and greedy, 'short term gain' mentality, "killed the goose that used to lay the golden eggs". Remember, the creepy crawling ads that took up more screen space than the movie itself? Remember, the tediously long ad breaks, every 15 minutes during the movie? Well, someone needs to remind Mr. Modi of this story.
