Aren't the older hdmi based onkyo recievers supposed to be ticking time bombs because of hdmi board overheating?

No i mean they're not going to literally explore, but all of them will die sooner or later. It is a certainty, and sooner rather than later. The market is flooded with them at low prices because people are either afraid of this, and have upgraded. There are some repairs that will make then function normally for a few months more, some unscrupulous sellers are selling such repaired items too.

HDMI board replacement. Thrice. Never happened since I moved to Denon.

Also inferior to Denon Marantz as a general experience
