Flipkart Flyte Anniversary - Free Downloads!

Off topic...but why has FLAC not got the mainstream acceptance is deserves? Is it because of the lack of commercial players supporting this format? Are we in a chicken-and-egg dilemma here?

BTW...IMHO...320 kbps is not so bad for casual listening...

Thanks for this info. I m already a flyte fan.

Is there any requirement like downloads should happen on same day it added into library? Or before these 10 days?

One of my friends who runs an online music company had the following reasons
1. FLAC requires investments in a convertor (not sure of the price or the costs of the same) from the masters
2. FLAC has to be kept as one more option as its not universally playable by all devices like iphone/ipads/ even regular players in car stereo
3. Adds to more space as they have to keep multiple formats
4. Right now all are targeted to mass market and not to afficanados

One of the reasons could be the huge file sizes.
Just a couple of albums in FLAC would consume my whole month's quota of download limit. Most of the broadband plans are with a FUP limit (i.e Fair Usage Policy) of a few Gigs.
Heck, even DVDs have not become mainstream even today! Go to any movie rental shop and they will offer a pirated copy of VCD for some 20-30 bucks. Ask for a DVD and they say DVDs are costlier and nobody wants them because it does'nt make any difference! This happens in Navi Mumbai, I cant imagine what will be the state of affairs in B & C towns. Now who will "educate" all these people? ... Anyway, sorry for going offtopic.

I too hope FLAC becomes mainstream sooner than later :)

Hi,

I was hoping that flyte would start offering 'flac' on their birthday.

I'll let this offer pass.

To me it don't matter if its MP3,FLAC Vinyl or good old AM radio. It's the Music not the format or equipment its played on.:)

Todays downloads feature an album of Janis Joplin "Pearl". Back then we had a Panasonic two in one and I remember enjoying her singing and unique voice on that as much as I enjoy listening to her on my present system.

I think Janis Joplin singing this classic Kristofferson song is the best of the several covers out there. What a voice:clapping:

Couldn't agree more! In fact my wife keeps reminding me of my college days when we used to listen to music on an old beat-up philips 2-in-1...the kinds where you have to wedge a pen to eject the tape...and we used to be totally immersed in music...analyzing every note...every word...now, she says, I listen more to sound rather than the music...perils of our hobby

You hit the nail on the head! it's not mainstream purely because there's no money in it...yet. these days your mobile phone has become the de facto music player...where do you have the space to store flacs in them? And how many portable music players do you have that supports flac? like I said...chicken? or egg?

Even though flac is preffered, 320 will not hurt much. Downloaded American idiot- green Day. Nothing wrong in it even though it's 128 kbps (max in flyte for this album) . Artists like green day can be listened even in 128, as there is not much musical excellency than lyrics.

Guys, I m travelling, in hotel now, Donno how much these dudes will charge for bits of download. I guess the music added in library remain there even after free period over.

Thanks soul. Have downloaded Mingus ah um. Don't understand music but all tracks of Mingus ah um are superb except ggtrain, girl of my dreams & pussy cat dues.
Better get it in your soul, Boogie stop shuffle & Fables Of Faubus are instantly likeable. :licklips:
Thanks again.

My take is this is the right opportunity to dip into new music. Download, listen, keep if you like it...'archive' if you dont

So far I haven't found any of the rock titles of interest...but i've downloaded all jazz & blues and most of the classical and sufi...the best part is the blazing download through put that I'm getting :ohyeah:

I found mingus good so thought of sharing. Have downloaded other jazz album tracks too.:D
As for rock, lets hope they are saving the best for last.
Regards

They are giving songs for download,it is good.but some of songs is not in that movie. They are giving some another movie songs into another movie for download.

This has been good so far. I do not know much (anything, to be frank) about Jazz. I always wanted to try it, but got stuck forever in the 'where-do-I-start' loop. Flyte's selection has narrowed it down for me and I've been downloading away. I've also downloaded some Rock classics, which I know only by reputation, but never got around to listening so far.

The encoder seems to vary between Lavf (FFMPEG?) and LAME 3.98 / 3.99. While I am happy that almost all files (from what I've scanned) have embedded album art (even composer and lyricist tags in some cases), I wonder why they left out track number in most cases (except for a few Classical albums). I'll need to work on the tagging front once I've downloaded everything.

Not expert on music but some good rock and jazz music is available today. Good thing is you can listen to small samples. There is a album rating guide also. Downloading cornbread, Andrew Hill, Something else and Ahmad Jamal which sounded good.
Can't thank soul enough but thanks again.
Regards.
