Floorstanding Speakers or Studio Monitors? (Mainly for Movies)

Hello, Guys I have booked SONY 46EX710 LED-LCD TV and is gonna arrive here on Saturday max. So now I need speakers for this beauty. First of all I think I should tell u my sound preferences/liking that what kinda sound I like the most.

Deep, tight, punchy bass with vocals like singer is singing standing next before me, and treble should be smooth only, not sparky at all. I hate boomy bass.

My budget is around Rs. 20,000 or may be 25,000(only for speakers) and I can only buy Norge 2060 amplifier coz it's cheaper and have awesome performance.

Also my eyes are on KRK RP6 or may be RP8, RP6 will cost me 36k and RP8 will cost me 46k I think and these are powered studio monitors so I think I not need to buy separate amp. for this. what say?

Now come to my room size which is 12x15 max and the distance between speakers and me will be 13-14 feet max.

I have short-listed two floorstanding speakers:

1. Wharfedale Diamond 9.6
2. Polk Audio TSi500

Will anyone of these floorstanders ideal for my sound preference/taste?

Hey I am not sure how you are getting 14ft space unless you are stuck on the wall and planned to place speakers on the otherside.... in a 12X15 room...

Norge and Wharf 9.6 shld be better from your choice... But I'd say go for a BS + SUB combo .... You will enjoy the experience.

As u have suggested AE so I think KRK RP6 will be more more superior than the AE, as KRK don't need external AMP to drive.

dnt know about polks but wharfedales midrange are colored to the cores, treble are "too" smooth and base not so punchy and tight with latest diamond series never heard vardus series. try quad 11L2 or new 11L classic they can be called as "studio monitors" the sound which you are looking for

11L2 (bookshelfs) - 28k u can bargain! and IMO sounds better than 9.6

dnt know about polks but wharfedales midrange are colored to the cores, treble are "too" smooth and base not so punchy and tight with latest diamond series never heard vardus series. try quad 11L2 or new 11L classic they can be called as "studio monitors" the sound which you are looking for

I have read reviews on wharfedales 9.6 and they are very gud in reviews, though I have not listened them personally and I cannot listen any of them personally unless I buy that coz I live in Gwalior and no speakers available in my city as u know it is quite difficult to go to other city to city to take demo only. :sad:

I can only order online that is why I have mentioned my sound preferences, room size, listening distance and all so that I couldn't chose wrong speaker set coz I can order them online via shipping.

Considering your room size + listening distance of 14 feet + sonic-preferences, I would reccomend...
1st choice: Wharfe 9.1 + Norge-2060 + Wharfe SW-150 sub
(The flexibility to move around the sub in 12x15 size room + setting sub-level independently + setting desired crossover-freq, to get optimum bass. is the KEY-ADVANTAGE in this option)

OR

2nd Choice: Wharfedale 9.5 (not 9.6) + Norge 1000 amp. (choose this, if you can afford to leave 2 feet space from rear and sides from Wharfe 9.5, then this will give more musically-coherent sound than the sub option... most people cannot leave this clear space and the 9.5 FS ends up sounding boomy)

I assume that you want the sound at listening distance, to be as grand as the cinema on your TV. I doubt if Bookshelfs (in 25k range) or Studio Monitors will deliver grand sound (with your sonic preference) at 14 feet. Hence I don't reccomend these.

There are umpteen happy owners of wharfe-Norge combo in this forum. In all probability, you will like this combo for what it delivers in its price range.

The KRKs are good speakers in their own rights but not too suitable for your intended listening. These are designed as near-field studio monitors with a listening distance of about 1-1.5m (depending on the size of the studio mixer), mounted on the same table as the studio mixer (or perhaps on a dedicated mount). It would be suitable for computer desk listening.

If at all you plan to opt for the KRKs, you may like to look at similar active models from Audioengine, or entry level Dynaudios and Genelecs.

But if it's floorstanders you are after, then your choice of Norge amp is a good bet. Happy hunting

First of all Thanks a lot for ur suggestion and I am in a search over internet.

I have searched on whathifi and found these:

1. Monitor Audio BX2 (left and right pair)
2. Norge 2060 Amplifier
3. Wharfedale Diamond SW150


What do u think about this set-up?

Is it less, equal or better than the one u suggested or will this setup completely fulfill my sonic preferences upto 100%?

I am desperately waiting for the input.

well i heard tannoy F1, warf 9.1, 9.5 and quad 11l2 and i am sure quad had the best vocals, highs and lows (for music) tannoys were also good but sparky and lack of bass which r not for u and wharfs midrange was out of question for me its very colored and as far as genelec is concerned i worked on those when i used to do dubbing for a film in empire studios in mumbai these speakers are not for home use they are for studio rooms u have to sit close to them.

u also be watching TV programs too right? so in my opinion ur mid range should be excellent! but always remember never mix and mach speaker setups with other brand and family!

try reading reviews of jamo 606 they are floor standers with side firing subwoofers or a 2.1 system would be better for movies and combination of norge with hifundu 2.0 or 2.1 spk system is also a bad idea. cheers

Hi Abhi,
1. Unless you have budget limitations, choose the sub from the same family as the front speakers. In the case below, the sub should be from BX2 range only.
2. The Norge 2060 may not be left with much loudness-margin while driving medium-size bookshelf like BX2 to deliver explosive sound fx. I would recommend Norge-1000 in this case. Norge-2060 will workout only if you are mating with small bookshelfs like 9.1 (having max 4.5 inch woofer)

never heard tangent and sonic wont match with warf its a different company all together if u like warm sound with good bass u go with norge + 9.1 + sw150 good for watching movies or try jamo 606 will be cheaper 26k. also search for other floor standing speakers with side firing subs. i dont knw how norge sound is and how quad will perform.

Your requirements are quite "standard", and "established" combos are available to serve them. So there shouldn't be a confusion.
