I just purchased a Panasonic S48 dvd player as I needed a dvd player for my old TV setup (I use PC as main source for music) .

The main reason why I chose this is because it has only 2.0 channel out. No other outputs, no HDMI or 5.1 out. All 5.1 dvd sound gets down mixed to 2.0. Due to this, I though it can perform well in 2.0 setup.

I must say, it's quite good for its price. Paid 2100 for this. It has usb and 24bit/192hz dac. With 90 db snr and 80db dynamic range. On my test, It perform decently as a CD source for my stereo setup. ( is more bright on high frequencies and got only average dynamic range but overall SQ is much better than expected from budget player)

Another good budget source is pioneer dvd player. I chose Pana over pioneer, so far happy with this.

For those postpone their high-end CD player purchase, I recommend this player.

90db SNR is inferior compared to DACs which are built in AVRs and is comparable to onboard DAC of PCs. So if you have a PC better buy a low cost Xonar card.

My pc motherboard have intel high definition audio which has 108db snr. (I will be getting high end dac soon) .

Pana sounds good (specs do differ from sound, my 108 db snr 32bit/192hz computer audio doesn't show much difference from Pana. There's difference but not huge) . My 10K Sony bdp-490 sounds worse than this Panasonic.

As told earlier, this thread is for those who need decent source for low cost. It's a discussion about the best in low priced source.

Anyone using pioneer dvd player as source?

I am using Pioneer DV 400 K as source for the past 5 year or so. It is still running strong. Never had to replace the laser pickup:ohyeah:
This player playes music cds and sounds quiet balanced. High frequencys are well rendered without any sharp edge.
Paid Rs 6750 when I bought it from Japonica Kolkata.

The test of the machine is the satisfaction it gives you.
There isn't any other test.
If the machine produces tranquility, it's right.
If it disturbs you, it's wrong
UNTIL,
either the machine
OR
your mind is changed.
;):ohyeah:

It does not give me satisfaction, but it's okay and I think very good for the price. I am going to get good DAC.

Usually I source from computer which have 108db snr 32bit /192khz (intel high definition audio) sound.

Since my motherboard is a server board, it consumes lot of energy, due to that, I use this dvd player I bought for TV when I'm not using pc.

I just started this thread to help those who need budget source till they get dac or cd player.
