I got hold of couple of MA CHR-70A 4" champaigne color drivers from Singapore couple of weeks ago and started the itch to build and finish the Frugal Horn immediately
hyeah:. The necessary components like the speaker terminals, speaker connectors, woolen felt booked it from diyaudiocart.com site and I received the same last week. So couple of days back got hold of my carpenters and in a day's time managed to cut the panels to size as per the measurements from this site. As they were not having any idea of the purpose for which the panels were being cut, I have to measure it accurately and use the mathematical geometry box rulers for the angled cuts with perfect degree. I made sure that they followed my instructions but still they were not able to give a precision cut using the jigsaw. I have to work overtime with sandpaper to make it to the accurate cut.
Thanks to bijin/bibin for the pictures of their build I was able to follow it for having the woolen felt pasted properly on all the sides behind the driver mounting baffle. I followed the instructions given in the above site for polyfill (recron pillow stuffing) fillings for my CHR-70 drivers. Spent yesterday and today full day and was able to make the cabinets ready by today evening
and mounted the drivers and started listening to them. I got hold of a small piece of 4mm veneer sheet which I am going to use on the baffle so that I can make the drivers as flush mounting similar to my Zaph build.
I can now proudly say that this is my baby as I did the entire cabinets myself and I think I improved from my Zaph build but still the finish is not as good as bijin/bibin's. Hopefully I can improve further and by the time I become expect my wife would have thrown me out
Coming to the listening impressions, I started with AR Rahman's best album (Kandukondain Kandukondain) as per my taste with Hari Harans voice. With just barely less than 10 min burn-in his voice was coming out so clearly with very nice instrument separation. The bass is superb with such a small driver and I think all the credit goes to the cabinet design. I felt the highs are little shrill at present but should settle down after may be 100 hrs but looking at online reviews most of the people have used a 3" super tweeter to compliment the highs. But I feel I may not require the tweeter fingers crossed.
My Zaph BS are resting now and the FH are doing my stereo duty. Hopefully in another couple of months time I will be getting the Pass B1 and a nice power amplifier for my Zaph speakers and the Marantz amp with the FH and move them to my bedroom.
Not yet decided with the finish but thinking of going with auto grade spray finish or may be use the laminate veneer. Now the build pictures
