People like Ethan Winer on the other hand recommend as dead a room as can be possible with lots of absorption.
His point of view - A recording already has the ambience of the place it was recorded in and so a stereo will reproduce it close to the original if room does not factor in.

Only quibble I have with it is the part where they say "the "golden ratios" cited above will go a long way to minimizing those pesky standing waves".
That ain't gonna happen. Standing waves are a result of bass reflecting off the walls. You can change room dimensions but that will only change what frequencies the standing waves are at. As long as you have walls, you'll have standing waves.
The article does make some great points about: preserving side wall reflections for better spaciousness, everyday furniture being very helpful with acoustics, the dangers of making the room over-absorptive, and bass traps needing to be big to be effective.
