Hi,
I am based in a non metro (South India) with almost zero hifi outlets or service centers, but very good local electronics market/service. My friend in UK can bring in an AVR (used). For a surround setup - both movies and music. But we are more of stereo-heads and not well versed with HT gear.

Now scouting for used AVRs (nothing fancy - basic 5.1/7.1) on FB marketplace/eBayUK - around 100GBP :(. Looking for advice from FMs with experience 🤝.
  1. Any UK outlet/community other than FB/eBay?
  2. What brands to look at? (Availability is the usual Yamaha, Onkyo, Sony etc to the likes of Technics, Cambridge & Sherwood.)
  3. What vintage is ideal? (Optical inputs at the minimum.)
  4. Most are 230V, is getting a 120V unit adviceable?
  5. Are (non) Remote units a dealbreaker?
Any info/tips regarding selection, purchase, transport and renovation is highly appreciated.✌️ ThanX a lot in advance!

i have ordered multiple times from UK, no problems at all. my source has been primarily eBay

1. look for people who are open to shipping internationally and their experience shipping internationally (i find germans to be very meticulous in their packing, vs folks from london or therebouts, anyways, do have clarity on how they intend to ship)
2. check their rating on eBay, nothing less than 99% is acceptable, also should have multiple feedback...ideally 50 or more
3. i prefer having them shipped royal mail, in which case it's handed to indian post (i have my lack of trust on big names, they may fleece higher on customs related charges, while this is just an assumption, broadly, its fine)

Ok, will scout more on eBay. In my case, the delivery will be to my friend who is in MK, which makes things easier :)

Buy something simpler like an integrated two channel amplifier rather than an AVR.
Already have (too much?) of Stereo Setups o_O. The (basic) Surround setup is more for movie watching and checking out the surround remixes of classic albums & concerts (esp. those from Steven Wilson ☺️ )

Okay I sincerely then suggest you purchase a Harman kardon AVR amplifier - black faced from before 2003. Not the silver faced ones. The black faced ones. They will have optical in. And their high current capacity transformer will give you good clean sound at all levels in surround as well as two channel. And there's a few available on Kerala OLX India also if you search. This is my sincerest well intentioned advice.
I use a Harman kardon AVR 3550 myself. 5.1 in 2.1 mode mostly.
