Got my sony 46hx850 last week

@Neubee.. the 3D channel shows National Geographic Channel 3d programs... so far in the last 10 days I have never seen it showing anything else apart from the same 4-5 programs repeat over and over... 3d is good.. it feels like genuine Imax type 3d not upscaled fake 3d...picture quality is good... but lack of content.

@Blessed... Sound is 5.1 , Subscription charge is something like Rs.470 I think.. now we have 2 months free HD platinum pack with the DVR box. Videocon claims to have the max asli HD channels (refer to the website) . In addition it has got a nice HD music channel. PQ of that music channel is really good. You can see the picture quality of D2H on youtube. There is a video where an user is surfing around all the HD channels on D2H. Google on youtube "Videocon D2H DVR box" you can see that video n find out about the picture quality.

The service vanishing problem happens once a while... mostly when the tv has not been turned on for few days. But its very easily fixed by just a phone call. Its not a problem at all.

Bravia850, which home theater are you using to get surround sound?

I must say your husband is very lucky to have a wife like you who appreciates and has enough knowledge in latest tech.

is this a good tv for sd channels at 6 feet distance ?

If you are going to be watching SD only, a CRT is the best bet.

At 7 to 8 ft, SD is just tolerable on my 46HX850, but once you see what it can do with a HD feed, you will just get sick of SD.

Best thing to do is get the HX850 and get a HD set top box with HD channels for TV. If you can find a set top box, and I believe there are some, that upscales SD, that should to an extent take care of the SD channels.

Yes - the HD channels provided by HD set top box will have a very good impact on HX850, but SD channels will still look ugly on any flat panels. Any of the upscalers (if present) in set top box are almost of no use. Even the AV receivers having video upscaling are not good enough to handle SD signals. Probably one has to buy very costly high end AV receivers or video scalers to see some difference (even then they may not appeal to videophiles). At the same time, I agree viewing SD contents from DVD source makes lot of impact, but not on the broadcast sources.

@Neubee... Once you start watching HD channels you cant watch SD channels anymore... HD channels are so awesome that you will not like SD channels. SD channels are watchable but not good. The positive is a lot of hindi national channels and english channels do have HD channels alternative.

Ha! Ha! Very true. Unfortunately on TS, all movie channels except SM are non-HD. Further they offer letterbox mode in 4:3 and when displayed on 16:9 TV, appear unsually stretched - Katrina Kaif looks like Preeti Ganguly, if you get the gist. Zooming crops off too much picture. :(

Thanks. I too was given the same quote when I went to demo for it. I had to really bargain hard..(literally threaten to back out of buying it ) before I could wriggle out the discount.

This just goes to show you how much bull the salesmen are capable of giving. I was told this TV is priced at 1,19,000. Upon inquiring about discounts or the lowest they were willing to sell the TV for, I was told that if they even reduced the price by one rupee Sony would refuse to give warranty on this TV.

:) when i went for demo , even hd channel was looking just ok , but i guess its different in home . is it possible to buy a stb and subscribe hd channels only ( instead of getting full pack ) and fix both cable and dth cables into one line , so we can get everything at lower cost . i feel that cable is better for sd channels just as dth is better for hd channels .

^

Unfortunately not, you cant do that. No DTH provider allows subscription exclusively for HD channels.

Though it may be possible your cable operator offers HD channels too ? You can ask once.

Btw I found these two videos that show off the black level performance of HX850 in a completely dark room using Kuro and Panasonic Viera Demo bluray.

In my 40HX850 there is cut in aluminium ring on lower right corner(it is like aluminium ring starts from this point). Need to confirm if it is normal or it should be continuous.

Congrats... we got the same tv 2 weeks back from Reliance Digital for 1 lac 5k which includes exchange price of 2k for our old tv and 1k cash back from ICICI bank. So technically the price comes to 1 lac 7k. We didnt get the extended warranty for which they quoted 7k extra and got 1 stupid digital photoframe and a pendrive with MIB 3 movie in it n 2 3d glasses. This tv is just soo awesome... best buy ever lol.

Do get the extended warranty from Sony india(dont get from reliance, other 3party etc) for +2yrs at 5k, this way your expensive investment will be protected for 3yrs at just 5k, you can still extend it, just visit the nearest sony centre with your tv bill and warranty card.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
