I had posted some details on this topic a little more than one year back:

http://www.hifivision.com/digital-cable-dth/663-hd-channels.html#post2933

I am not sure where the whole project is as of today.
DD might go ahead with its plan, but the DTH providers have been going slow due to the economic downturn, otherwise we would have been watching HDTV by now :(

We already have content being produced in HD. It is the DTH and cable TV service providers who are not delivering it to us in HD.

Thanks,
Sharad

I have read this many times and hopefully can catch some of the action in HD. One big constraint is getting the HD set top boxes in time. Somehow I have a feeling this wont come through quickly.

Eventually when HDTV broadcast starts in India then who will be the content providers ,the private DTH players or state run DD.Will new content be created or current content upscaled and converted for HDTV transmission.
Can we receive HDTV content with the current set of set top boxes provided by the current lot of DTH providers. Will HDTV content be viewable on a non-HD display and will the HDTV signal carry HD surround formats like Dolby True HD, DTS HD Master.

So many questions so early.:)

Channel 9X News is hd ready. but thats about it. there's no other hd channels in India.

reliance, tata sky and all other dth operators have postponed the launch of their own respective dth STBs in view of the economic slowdown.

so no HD as of now.

I was pretty sure that someone would post that misleading info that 9X has been putting out ....

When you read the statement carefully, you will realise that :

They are High Def - READY

Their studio cameras and tape are HD. Today a HD studio Camera costs less than US $ 5K ... so even garage operation porn movies are shot with HD Cameras... Incidentally Porn is the largest user segment of HD, but that is a completely different story.

The signal leaving their studio Is NOT HD or even HD Ready ( 720p) it is vanila flavour Standard Definition (SD).

The signal that they broadcast to their satellite transponder is NOT HD ... merely SD.

The Satellite Receivers that they distribute to receive the 9X channels ( The signal is encrypted and can ONLY be received with the 9X receivers ) is NOT HDTV Ready. It is only capable of Standard definition.

HD Broadcasts require about 50% more transponder capacity ( and annual rentals ) than SD.

9X can ill afford this ...

( Reports are that the channel has been looking for a buyer for MONTHS but no one wants to touch it. The Financers reportedly have refused to bank roll the channel any further, unless the Mukerjeas step down ... but Thats another story...

They have not even paid for all their launch ads ( Sept 2007 ! )... Thats another story too ! :D

Start TV is also producing most of the new content in high definition.

That only means that they are using HD cameras for some of their shoots.

The signals leaving their studio are only Standard Def NOT HD.

The Satellite Receivers that STAR distributes to receive its channels ( The signal is encrypted and can ONLY be received with STAR TV's receivers ) is NOT HDTV Ready. It is only capable of Standard definition.

Gentlemen, I reiterate :
There are NO Indian HDTV channels... atleast Yet.

The Indian govt has committed to broadcast the Delhi Commonwealth games in HD. That is a 2 year old commitment. I am sure that promise will be kept.

There are a couple of foreign channels over India that are in HD. More plan to join. To date NONE of these has a Downlink licence for the I&B ministry, and hence it is illegal for Cable, DTH and IPTV platforms to carry them.

I speculate that HDTV channels will be available in India thru Satellite & DTH before end 2009.

The ICC Cable network in Pune is the ONLY source of true HD content piped to TV sets in India - YET. ( Excluding Internet downloads, ofcourse )

The 9x channels (signal) are in HD. That's what they have been advertising since the very begining.

I have not seen any Star Satellite Receivers, where do you get them from? Do they work with the DTH service providers?

Thanks,
Sharad

i'll tell you what the problem is. channel 9X news transmits its signals at hd ready resolutions (say 1080i) but our DTH companies arent giving us those unhampered signals. we are watching "downscaled" dvd versions of an HD ready channel. thats the biggest tragedy! :(

I do not expect HDTV broadcast in India until there is a significant market share of LCD/plasma tvs.

LCDs and plasmas have been around for sometime now but still havent penetrated the market. The maximum TV viewers in India are from the middle income group, and LCDs still do not fall in the price range of these people.

if you are a channel broadcaster/producer, why would you invest in such a market? its like how it was when India moved from black and white televisions to colour televisions.

actually thats not exactly the case. LCDs (though not plasmas) have started to penetrate the indian middle class homes. prices have come down dramatically and is likely to lower further in the next few months.

as far as HD channels are concerned, Nat Geo HD and Discovery Channel HD have already applied for licences from the I&B ministry. so, in the next few months we can expect HD channels to come into the foray. although HD broadcasting in its true sense, i.e. 1080i would be something which i'm looking forward to.
