No need to worry, I did not get drunk and made sinful gestures at people, nor did I rolled down the car windows and decided to moon some younger guys. Instead last night when I was listening to music I had an urge, an urge for going as Joni Mitchell would say. An urge to try new warmer pastures, new pair of speakers. I have been happy with my Sonodyne's for an year now but they are bright. Not like the sunlight, but if you stay out in sun too long you get a tan, similarly if you listen to them for a prolonged period of time and especially to certain type of music you get that the final experience can be cluttered, and non-discreet, your ears get too tired to appreciate the instruments, and the individual song that each instrument sings, because it is all just too confusing!
Listen to "Going to California" by Led Zep, or listen to Annie's song by Denver....it feels like a waste. My heart broke to pieces whenever I could not enjoy Pink Floyd due to the limitations of not their music but a combination of my ears and the speakers.
Now make no mistake the Sonodyne's are excellent speakers for their price, beautifully detailed they can be, crisp and tight bass, but the heart always wants more. So last night, oh yes last night was the cursed one, I felt I had to do something. Diligently I went to bed, woke up early, took care of my chores and decided that I have saved enough for my marriage, so what if people have to settle for Vanilla ice cream rather than Sundae Delights, it is I who will listen to the music and never cared for those relatives anyway.
An hour later I was listening to Aviano 1, Aviano 2, Dali Lektor, Dali Zensor 1, Wharefedale 10.5 and one certain Triangle Color Bookshelves at SKS, did not dare to listen to the Quadral Aurums that SKS had. Another couple of hours later I was on my way back home with a pair of Dali Zensor 1 with mixed feelings. Mixed because I am getting married in February, and as much as the wedlock promises me for my future life, it is because of this momentous event I could not dare to pick up the Triangles. My word, what speakers ! What soundstage, what low end extension and liquid bliss vocals ! My word, what an immerssive experience!
No regrets, the Dali Zensors were the best of the rest, beautiful pair for the price paid (Vanilla ice cream has saved me 22K, and that went to the Dalis). Open, controlled and warm. They get excited when you wish them to, and when you want them to reflect with you thinking about the white bliss of ABC in Nepal, they let you do that. The clutter is gone, I feel the precision and proper definition of how it was intended, although Pink Floyd does not quite sound like they did on the Triangles, I can enjoy them without regrets now. Triangles will have to wait for now, because the marriage needs to happen, my would be wife deserves a lot more credit than I give her.
Hec...I did it, I bought Dali Zensors, and I a loving them!
p.s: I have not gone much into the detailed review or positives of the speakers, but one experience I should share. Earlier in the night I was listening to Eleni Karaindrou's live performance (Elegy for the uprooting), at the end of the performance the audience stands up and applauds the masterful performance. The applause begin with a murmur, I was immersed into the music, when the applause started, I looked to my left startled almost expecting to find myself in a shadowy lit grand auditorium somewhere in Europe among the audience and applauding heartily. The realism of the moment is not lost with me, tells you something about the Zensors. To think they are only beginning to open up...
