Hi,

I bought a pair of this Peerless India S20PG 8" woofer few months ago. Thought of building a pair of bass module for my front L&R.

The project was on hold due to lack of time. Now I have some time and can work on this project. The problem is, there are very few parameters known about this driver. So I need opinion from FMs to build the cabinet for this two. I want to build separate enclosure for each channel and would look like a sub.

The idea is to drive them with AVR Front L&R along with my existing small bookshelves (4" mid-bass, 1/2" tweeter). So basically I would bi-wire them.

Please help me with the enclosure volume for ported design. I know that in this type of situation, we generally go with sealed design. But that will limit the bass extension. I am open to ideas. So please shoot :)

Thanks in advance.

Cheers!

Am not gonna comment as I am no expert!
And as you have said i have made enclosure's for the full range's , they sound cool!
And some parts for the amp are hard to source... so not done still yet for one channel, so didnt inform you

Great to know you are liking the sound. So what have you done? Ported or sealed?

Thats fine. You can let me know which parts are you feeling hard to source? Let me see if I can help you.

I think that woofer has PP cone with a 80mm dia magnet rated 40W.
PIECE OF JUNK ! sounds muddy. I had heard that some times back.

I can provide you 8" woofer with composite paper cone with rubber surround. If you hear those you will never think off using Peerless India stuff.
A FM ...... madman29 had brought the drivers from me way back. Those were rated 120W. You can call him to find out 9836134142 (Shantanu).
I have the same woofer in 80W, 100W & 120W power rating.

I am sure your driver will be better than this driver and there are far better drivers out there. But I am not climbing the hill immediately. I spend the minimum possible for the sound of movies as I deliberately steer my extra fund towards my stereo.

I believe this one, if made correctly, would sound close or somewhat better than some basic HTiB sub? If that is the outcome I will be happily dwelling with it.

Now the question is, what will be the right enclosure volume? Sealed or Ported?

If you do not have the TS parameters for this then forget about getting any enclosure volume near optimal. If you go the trial method, all the best!!!

I suggest that you measure the TS parameters using REW and a soundcard. It does not appear too hard to do.

Keith,
Yes you are very correct, without the parameters I would never get there. But I was taking my chances if anybody has the parameters or built with it. Let me wait for some more days and see if anybody comes up with any specs.

BTW, I am not sure whether Peerless hasn't provided the specs or it is just not posted by diyaudiocart.com?

Firstly having the T/S is very important to get the right design, that said ported and sealed cabinets are usually not that picky when compared to horns or bandpass boxes. You should try to get the T/S off it and then come back and post them.

I don't know what kind of volume you want for movies or extension, but a 8" driver is a very bad choice for this. Lower frequencies demand displacement and an 8" driver can't move much air and they usually have very limited xmax anyway.

As for ported or sealed, I would suggest ported with a steep HPF. This will maximize the SPL for your budget. Keep in mind that when used in a sealed enclosure the chances of mechanical damage due to excursion are very high, especially without any HPF and with user error, the sealed box will also severely limit SPL in the lower frequencies due to very little displacement. There is a reason most HTiBs use a ported box or a bandpass. Risk of damage can be controlled and SPL maximized for a low budget driver with the right box size and HPF.

Good luck.

Sorry think i have missed the thread here..
The enclosure is sealed dont need that much of bottom end, which i wont find in a full range driver(cheap) which i dont know any measurements of!

Secondly I need to source parts for an active crossover for a sub(which i dont have any clue about).

Thirdly the lm3886 circuit i still cant find a good pcb locally...
Any Fm here that can help me with lm3886 pcb (simple design not complicated and parts that i can manage of chadni)

Presently I am into Re-Cone & Fabrication of HI-POWER pro sound loudspeakers for large sound reinforcement. Earlier was into hi-fi speakers. I can re-fabricate hi-fi drives in small quantity for DIY's like you , since I have huge left over parts with me. But not in a regular basis. It will any day outperform Peerless drivers.
Very recently I had a challenging requirement from a FM ... Jerry Austin, a sound engineer from Bangalore. He wanted a mid-bass 15" / 500W driver that can match up to Eminence Kappa pro15 (USA). I supplied him with a pair of my VIPER15X 15"/500W. He was 100% satisfied . And quoted " Eminence is not even closer to your drivers". You can call him & find out more ..... mob.09597002497 (Jerry).
