Hi Guys,

One of my friend is coming from US on 25th Jan and has agreed to carry a projector for me.

My requirement is is FULL HD (1080p) projector. 3D is not a must have but a nice to have. My budget in terms of USD price is 1400 at max. I am also thinking of buying Panny BDT220 for 98 USD if i purchase a 3D projector. Else have a Sony DVD which works just perfect.

Please suggest suitable projectors (LCD/3LCD ones). I have heard about some rainbow effect of DLP but not sure what it is nor left with any time to demo it. My room is about 18*13 and the screen will be placed on 13 inch side. Room will have some lighting and is not a completely dark room in day time. One window is covered with plastic (gift cover) film and then has a curtain over it. Another small window has just curtain.

Will be used to watch a movie over weekend (@nite), TS HD channels(day/nite). For all other purpose my 32inch Sony LCD is serving me well.

Next in line would be it mounts and screen and would need suggestion if buying projector mount from US or here will make a difference. Know a dealer who supplies screens hence will take care of screen installation.

Also if I the suggestion is 3D then also suggest good 3d rf glasses options (epson 3020 @ USD 1400 comes with 2 3d glasses but one need to pay 100 usd/ 3d glass extra). We are 3 members (incl 1 kid) hence 3 are min, ideal requirement of 3d glasses are 5 in total (incl parents).

Thanks for reading this longish post. Appreciate all projector gurus to provide their insights and help me take an informed and trusted but a quick decision.

The reason of buying projector is also to avoid buying 1.2L Sony EX850 or Panny GT50 which I am eyeing for long but so far have resisted the temptation. If I can manage something bigger and better in around 1L in total, it will be much more satisfying. Already have a Onkyo 5100 HTiB which will complete the HT experience.

Thanks,
Vishu

Getting a quote of 86K plus taxes for epson 6100. Comes with 2 yrs warranty and 1 3d glass. The US version costs 70k INR.

Makes sense to buy from here or since it is my first experience with projector, shud I opt for GT750 , experience 3d and big screen @720p resolution. That will be much cheaper. Dont have any BR disc, downloaded only 720p movies thus far.

May be a fellow member from Delhi region can help share some collection of 1080p movies.

Confused on the 720p experience will it be worth to invest in 720p or should I go direct with 1080p.

It is also a call between investing 50k vs 1lac for 720p vs 1080p.

Please suggest!

What's the seating distance and screen size? A lot will depend on that.

As long as your seating distance is more than 1.5x screen width, you would be fine with 720p.

Hi Vishu_fbd,

Did you have look at the new BenQ W10170 ,a 1080 with 3D , good reviews about it in the US though not available thro Amazon the ofiical BenQ shop has it.It see this link for more info ,http://www.avsforum.com/t/1435626/benq-w1070-dlp-full-hd-3d-ready-with-lens-shift-for-1000 . I planning to pick it up soon.Good luck with your purchase.

Go for the epson 3020e which is wireless and available in the US. Will save u the cost of lengthy hdmi cables as well. At this stage it is better to opt for full hd.
Looks like 4 k is also around the corner....

My room in length is 16.2 feet and seating would be at 12 ft. At the width, the room measures 11 ft. Just measured exact dimensions.

What do you suggest 720p or 1080p.

Also bear in mind so far i have hardly had any true 1080 movies. All have been 720p res. TS HD broadcasts 1080i. For all practical purposes I havent missed 1080p nor got time to download those heavy file sizes. I know 1080p is recommended but then I dont have the content!

Do 3D movies come in 720p res or will the player downsize the res to fit the 720 projector, views?

How has been your experience with 6100? I have also got in touch with epson distributors here and they will arrange for demo next week at my place.

Do you suggest 3020e as better option than 6100 (almost equal to indian price with no warranty!).

For around 1.1 lakh you can get a Mitsu HC4000- Full HD 1080p- or for Panasonic 8000 Full HD and 3D for around 2.5 Lakh

Vishu - demo the product if possible before going for it. I have epson 6100 and im quite happy with it. but I find it a tad soft. I have not tweaked it till now.

cheers

Buying a TW6100 in the US for $1400-1500 when it is available for Rs 1-1.1 lacs in India does not make sense to me... If ur fend is tagged by customs alone for import duty u will end up paying more than what u would have had to pay in India... On my parents recent return for the US , they observed that the airport ppl were not allowing anyone with even 1 suitcase to cross the green channel & were asking them to have their baggage checked by custom officers... I didn't really matter to my dad as he was anyway not going through the green channel... Anyway just wanted to warn u of a possible scenario where u might end up paying more than the Indian price that too without having warranty... If ur budget is 1 lac & u want to buy an epson 3D projector then better buy in India... Actually if u can increase ur budget by 30-40k u can get the top of the line projector from epson(TW8100)... This projector will give u all the frills like lens shift etc & also give u too class PQ...

You are right, I have already asked the epson guys to arrange demo at my place. So far have asked them for 6100 demo but now I will include 8100 as well. Better to do comparison and then take a plunge. 40k will push my purchase by a month or two! ;)

check out my thread on 5360. This you can get it in US for around 420 dollars - it has decent reviews and is 3d ready..meaning you need a PC with 120Hz output or you have to buy a monoprice converter for 100 dollars. Plus glasses cost around 40 dollars a pop.

This projector may not be the best or greatest but those who have owned it seem to like it. whether 720p pr 1080P - no projector can match the clarity on a 50 or 55 inch TV but comes close.

In my case since it was my first projector I thought of buying a budget projector and then graduate in two years time to a full HD 3D. and from my research projector is one category in electronics where price have been coming down.

Regarding picture quality - HD channels on tata sky looks decent at around 10-12 feet. My 3d experience has been mixed since most of my 3d rips are 1 GB ones.

From what I hear the difference between a 720p and 1080 one is minimal.

So if you are buying from US..following are appx costs:

720p projector - 25K
Glasses (4) - 10K
3d Converter - 5K
Screen in India - 120 inch diagonal cost me 14K (liberty grandview) - if you want 12 feet then may be around 20K .

Also if you want a 13-14 feet diagonal picture - your projector needs to be some 15-16 feet from the screen I think - there are some excel files on the net that does the calcs for you - do check it out

hope it helps!
