Hello all!
I am fairly new to this forum and was frankly quite excited to find a local forum to discuss and get advice on AV from enthusiasts and specialists.

I am based in Mumbai and am looking to set up a small home theatre.
I am not proud of it, but my knowledge about these products is bare minimum.

We intend using it mostly for movies and occassionally to play games on my newly acquired PS3(which will also double up as a blue ray player for the HT).

I do not have a particular budget to stick to but from what I have read thus far, I think 2-3L will suffice. I definitely need something that is straightforward to operate and is low on maintenance.

I have attached 2 images of my home theatre:
Image 1 gives the dimensions and projector/tv wall is where our windows are currently and I am considering a roll down screen in front of them
Image 2 shows the aerial view of the room. The permanent sound isolation partition is in place however there is no A/V rack there as shown.

An old timer recommended I get an Optoma HD20 projector, Denon 1611 receiver and canton movie 125 mx 5.1 speakers. How does that combination sound with my PS3?

Any other recommendations?
Thanks in advance!
Puneet

Where are u gonna source the projector from??? If you are buying from India than the epson TW3600 for 80-82k with bill & 2 yr warranty is a better choice than the optoma HD20... Also if u want to go 3D than the epson TW6000 is a very good VFM option at just 1.05lacs with 2 free 3D glasses... Also for the screen you can chk out a FM Santy's DIY screen... He has used laminate instead of fabric & has gotten decent results...

Thanks very much for the info rajadeep. I am travelling to Dubai soon - would it make more sense to get a projector from there?
In India, someone recommended a Vivitek Projector 1080 (FUll HD) which costs around 1.25L. What do you think of that?
Also, I went to a demo and was recommended either of these combinations:
1. Jamo D500 speakers with sub 650 (THX 5.1 speakers) along with a Denon AVR1912
or
2. Jamo A102 HCS with sub 210 (5.1, Studio series) with Denon AVR1612

What do you think?

Denon 1611 and Canton Movie 125 are entry level stuff. I have never been able to hear anything with the 1611 unless I keep the volume on full. Frankly an HTIB from Onkyo or Yamaha would be a better choice.

In terms of receiver I would strongly suggest the 19xx or 2xxx series. You can look at equivalent models from Yamaha, Onkyo. Nowadays Pioneer is gaining momentum.

Vivitek is just entering in FullHD projection. They are more popular in office projections. The good brands to look for in projectors are Optoma, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, and Epson.

Do not look for receivers that pump out anything less than 100 watts per channel into 6 ohms (8 ohms - preferable). Matching them to speakers becomes a pain in the neck.

Look at you budget as follows:

1. Project - 1.25L
2. Receiver - 80K
3. Speakers - 1 - 1.5L
4. Fixed Screen - ~30K
5. Installation, wiring, etc - ~40K

If you are not averse to a bit of wood work, go for in-wall speakers, and hide the speakers behind the screen. That will keep the room clean with no speakers visible or standing on the floor.

Cheers
