You can connect using 3.5mm to RCA cable, but the sound quality will be better with an ipod dock. ie my personal experience.

by ipod dock, do you mean a speaker system specially built for ipod or hooking up an ipod doc to an av receiver?

An iPod Dock (not Doc) is a piece if hardware that has a small base with connectors at the back. You use these connectors to connect to the AVR using IC cables. When you want to use, just place the iPod on the dock. Whatever you now play will be routed to the AVR. Some of these units also charge the iPod when it is placed on the dock.
