How long have you lived with your speakers?

Since no speaker is perfect, each one has its own signature in music. So it goes to your taste of music which you enjoy.

I am wondering how long folks live with their speakers before looking for another sound. Anyone here lived 5 or more years with a speaker/ brand? 7? 10 +? I am not one who changes speakers frequently. My history, Philips stereo (2years), DIY 2 way (1Year), Altec Lansing (3Years), DIY 3 way 6 driver symmetrical array floor standers (2 Years), Magnepan MMG (3YEARS), Dali Piano Noble(1 Year), Dynaudio Audience floor standers (3 Years), Dali Concept-1 (Since 2009 to present day), Dynaudio Audience 42W (2011) to present day), Magnepan MG 1.6QR (2012 to present day). However, I am ready for a change.

That's my way on speakers period.

Anyway, the answer to your question is over ten years, maybe twelve. Lonf enough to have forgotten when I bought them (although I remember the purchase: I went to audition amplifiers and bought the demo speakers :lol.

They are Castle Seven-II floorstanders. Speakers for life? No, not really, but there is an embargo, baring item failure or unexpected (and unlikely riches), on hifi spending. So... 'till death do us part...

I think I have been the longest with my Altec Lansing ATP3 for about 4 years, during my college days.
Next contender would be my DIY transmission line speakers.

My Wharfedales/KEFs lasted only for a few months.

I'll divide my audio journey in two phases; before joining HFV and after joining HFV.

Started with 'Matka Speakers; Philips wide band drivers placed on earthen pots while in College which continued till I was in Army. 5 years

When I quit Army & took up my present job, I bought a Sony boombox which I had passed on to my sister after about 6 months.

Then I bought Aiwa all in one with two way speakers. 4 years.

Was looking for upgrade when I got posted to Delhi which has a wide availability of preowned stuff disposed off by foreign diplomats while moving back. Picked up old 3-way Kenwood speakers driven by a discrete stereo amp. Later, the cabinets got upgraded by a carpenter working for Lyrita Audio. 10 long years.

Then one fateful day, I joined hifivison.

Upgrade bug has bitten and the effects started to manifest.

Acoustic Portrait 2-way mini monitors. 1.5 years.

Cadence Arista ESL Hybrid floor standers. 2.5 years (to date)

Time for a change now.

Then I got this one as a birthday gift. It clung to me for about 4 years. At that time, I used to be so amazed by my friends Philips Powerhouse but I was still happy with these

After that, I bought some local made large bookshelf speakers which I used for about 3 years.

Then I bought my first HT and was extremely pleased with it at that time. I was using it for almost 5 years.

Philips LX600

After joining HFV, I bought these for my stereo setup.

Norge Millenium MKii

It was with me for less than 2 years.


Later upgraded to Energy RC30 which I used for a little more than 2 years.

Then finally got my hands on these metal beauties. Mid 2013 to present

After buying my first PC in 2007 i sold this within 3 months and have ATP3 since then, now I'm itching to buy a good set of wooden analogue 5.1 speakers to be connected directly to Asus Xonar DX.

My first speakers were given to me by my grandfather in 1994 - Philips ported bookshelves with a full-range single driver.
Next were Sansui largish bookshelves form a rack system.
DIY passive two way speakers 1997-2004
DIY active system 1999-2010
Mordaunt Short speakers 2006-2011
Wharfedale 10.1 and later 10.7 speakers 2011-2013
Acoustic Portrait MS101 being used now.

Come to think of it...

The speakers that preceded my Castles must have been with more for more than a decade too. They were three-way Sony model-forgotten, a Richer Sounds Special with my first ever all-my-own hifi. Looking more like bookshelf speakers, but too big, their "stands" were piles of London telephone directories that just added the needed few inches of hight.

Yes... I have only ever owned two sets of speakers for the hifi. The desktop turnover has been a little more, and is pending right now.

12 years - a pair of 3-way Ahuja speakers (not their horrid PA systems but actual wooden speakers) that I bought with money from my first part-time job back in 1985. They're still in my home in the northeast and get used whenever I go back. Pretty good sound for what they were.

True. I wish they were!
I am often quite amazed at how important it is to have a properly treated listening environment. That's exactly what I am unable to create for the Maggies. Sad, they are lying in the packing for the past year.

my DIY speakers of 1987 vintage still working and is with me. I had replaced the cone of the mid range of one of the speaker which was the subject of a different thread . the picture before repair of the cone is shown below

Technics SBC 450 - 3 way speakers currently using it in my HT set up- Bought it from Singapore in 1988 thats 25 years and Sonodyne TT DD 4000 bought in 1987 and still working fine What is working and not being used is Technics suv 65A class AA integrated amp and Technics double tape deck RST 22 Purchased in 1988

They were Dash Bookshelf speakers, which were local make i guess .... it was all fantasy
