All usb slots on comps seem to be hosts. However, there are devices coming up that provide a usb device/ slave feature. For example - popcorn hour. My question is, if I am making my own HTPC, how can I get this functionality?
I posted a similar thread earlier but could not reach a conclusion. But seeing a slave USB port on popcorn hour has confirmed that it may not be completely impossible to expose my comp's hdd as a usb drive.
How can this be achieved and what extra hardware is needed?

Here is my older thread - http://www.hifivision.com/home-thea...aming-over-usb-pc-usb-capable-dvd-player.html

For this you need a usb driver that will make your htpc be seen as a usb mass storage device.

USB mass storage device class - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Steps to acheve this are:
1. learn C programming
2. Join a unix or windows device drivers class
3.. rest will follow ...

Cheers

Hi Mirdul,
IMHO it is related to HTPC and av. I am asking how to implement in htpc a feature available in popcorn hour.

regards

Hi anm,
You are very right. I remember I tried to do this type of stuff during my college days. But I tried it on a Linux OS.

Meanwhile if your receiver has a bluetooth then it can get connected to your PC if piared.

Cranky - no it's a slave port which means the internal hard disk is exposed as a mass storage device when connected to say - a computer.

Well I am just evaluating how significant this feature is for an HTPC, given that it is indeed trivial over ethernet.

regards

It is not possible to use the hardware USB controller on a motherboard as a slave, AFAIK. It is hardwired as a hub,

IMHO it depends on the driver to implement the USB mass storage device class protocol not the hardware. If the driver can "talk" like a mass storage device then the htpc will work as a slave.
