How to understand the compatibility between Speakers and Sub-Woofer?

What you may be talking about is for the higher end subs which usually do not have a speaker out. These are usually kept in parallel to the speaker eg like in REL. The impedance is kept so high that only a very low signal is taken out but still in some amplifiers you can hear a minor reduction in volume when the sub goes on !
With REL it gets interesting. They recommend speaker level connections to their subs but at the same time do not apply high pass filters to frequencies going to the main speakers.

What should I set? My speakers impedance is 6 ohm but they are wired to sub and not to amp.
Your speakers are as good as wired directly to the amp. Select the impedance of the speakers.

In receivers too, there is an option to set the impedance. This is however, discouraged and is recommended to set the impedance at 8 ohms irrespective of the speakers impedance as it is for compliance purposes and will rob the receiver of its power. It's funny that a stereo amp is asking for this.

yes..i used to run Dual RELs at one time and their principle is to merge the lower end curve of a speaker with the subs own natrual upper curve

In fact the REL works best at the approximately 10db Point of the speaker for usual sealed box speakers. but it was not easy getting the lock in !
