I want to purchase an AVR for my living room which is 4000 to 4500 cubic feet taking into consideration the side passages. The viewing / seating distance from the front speakers will be around 10 to 12 feet. The purpose is mostly for movies and very occasional music and FM Radio.

I would want suggestions on AVRs considering that my budget for the AVR is around 50,000 rupees and I will be purchasing it from local market (because of warranty factors). I also want to purchase speakers within an additional budget of 25,000 rupees max but this I intend to buy from shopyourworld.com that allows cheaper options. I do see that there is a ready option for ONKYO HTS 5300 HTiB but read that its receiver does not upscale non-HDMI sources of video to HD level.

Please help me.

go for denon 1911 it comes around 40k or onkyo 808 ,onkyo will be better for movies...........

any pointers on the speaker set? onkyo 808 would it not cost beyond 50k since 608 is around 45k?

Look @ onkyo 508+SKS728 package.. Both combo was announced 49k.. bargain more to get some more discounts... Later you can add 2 more fronts and make it a 7.1 setup.... For now this combo is good.

What is the height of your room? Assuming it is 10 feet, you are talking about a room size of 400-450 square feet. That is a large room and AVRs such as Denon 1911 will be grossly underpowered.

If budget is a constraint, look for a receiver such as Denon 1911 that is married to a 5.1 sub/sat system. Another option is to create a HT corner in your room of roughly 10x15 or thereabouts.

If you want to use the full room, you need an amp that delivers around 150 to 200 watts per channel, and that is way beyond your budget.

Cheers

My room iss 15 ft by 13 feet. I may refuce the viewing distance to 10 feet. But this being a living room there arethere are ample open spaces to other rooms at its side.. Tx 608 has max out of 160 watts. If that is not going to suffice pls let me know going above my budget what is ging to be my best option. Pls also let me know about suitable speakers as well

15x13 makes a 195 sq.feet room. Unless you have a 23 feet ceiling, there is something wrong with your measurements. IF you do have a 23 feet ceiling, you have to build a false ceiling.

A 195 sq. feet room can be serviced well with an AVR such as Denon 1911 or Onkyo 608. In terms of speakers, as I said, look for Sub/Sat systems.

Cheers

My ceiling is 12 feet high, so that brings the volume to 15x13x12=2340 cubic feet

Now add to that a 5.5 feet wide and 12 feet high passage beside the living hall (no wall between) which is around 30 feet long and leads to other rooms and I have assumed that this would reduce the sound effect as the sound will disperse to some extent in this open passage as well whose volume comes to around 5.5x12x30=1980 cubic feet. Hence adding the two it comes to 4320 cubic feet. Although my intent is not to fill up the entire hall and passage with surround sound should I not consider the sound dissipation due to the two of them being side by side?

You cannot add a passage volume to a room dimension. A room dimension is what is enclosed between four walls and a ceiling. If one of walls is missing or smaller in dimension, mentally you have to imagine a wall there.

The effect of the passage can be very easily compensated by heavy drapes, or building a door with acoustic treatment.
