I.S.C.T Illuminating Frontier Build Up of a set of Reference / Near field Speakers with Bass Unit .

This is my very first try to build to an idea from way back; a set of Reference / Near field Speakers with a separated bass unit. So as the opportunity arose and I was in the middle of building the Test (Sealed/Vented) Build Up C which is quiet the similar shape, and so I was simple building as I had the plans now for some time & while the sub was in its first stages of its running in time.

Unfortunately I have to say that I did had my fair share of problems with this project as I had among other things a router bit breaking on me (just like that) and with that it did some damage of course, but I did also accidentally glued a panel which should not have been glued so all in all the design & visual outcome of this all is not quiet the outcome I envisaged because I had to make changes to save this project. Never the less there will be soon a next upgraded project.

Anyway, as a Test enclosure and the first of this kind it did not came up to bad! Most likely as it looks it will end up after the running in period or before in my bedroom as I always wanted something like that so I would have a better excuse to lie in bed a little longer.

I also have since a couple of weeks some new electronic equipment like CD Player (Optical the works) DAC, Amp, Linear power supplies AC & USB, filtering equipment, AU - HiFi - AC voltage power cables, high grade speaker cables Etc. and which by the way also included a Valve Pre-Amp & another Valve Pre-Amp & Headphone Amp, and I just love that enriched sweet & so very clear sound in general, but especially that Pre-Amp no.1 (no. 2 still in transit) so I think that would has to run this set up once completed.

Now it is also the first time ever I completed a project (Sub Build Up C), but I did not finish it off as in painting Etc. because once I had it running I could not stop myself from wanting to listen to it more & more because it just simple had such a great sound which I enjoyed so very much. Im eager now of course to finish off this set and join it up for the running in period.

It looks like to me that this set would need some nice little stands.

Sunday, March 26, 2017:
The first unit is completed and gone already upstairs for the test setup etc. full weight of the unit is 17.7 Kg without large solid metal Spikes!

Re: I.S.C.T Illuminating Frontier Build Up of a set of Reference / Near field Spe

Hi there again,

Image Collection: https://postimg.org/gallery/1z8s7008k/

Well, here are a couple of new Images from the completed Reference / Near field units I build resend! The Images are just quickly made in one of my empty rooms upstairs as these are just to heavy to carry around the place (upstairs/downstairs etc.). I guess in general I do not have to explain in detail of my first few days of listening pleasure as people will have heard of the quality & reputation of 'Focal' speaker chassis and the price range they are floating in. So the only thing to mention would be maybe ' Everything you heard in the good way is true X10!) after all you can get what you pay for even so I did myself not pay the full price of NZ $ 480.00 (only NZ $ 300.00), but Im inclined to go for my favorites maybe next time HERTZ Legend.

My presently ONLY item of surprise (as everything is well over any expectation) is that these small enclosures 'AS GREEN AS' are producing simple with a 6.5" speaker to much Bass on their own.
Yet 'EARLY DAYS' as in a month time I will take out the extra load it carries & after that fine tune more everything including the PR.

Nice to see something different! Now I wish if only I could hear it. I'm sure it sounds fun!

Thanks for your reply!

YES, different it is; yet not in a way were it is out of place as I believe myself in DIY development to use Shape, Angles & Weight for the physical structure and choice of better chassis suited in something like this project.
Money is of course a big factor when it comes to chassis as for example on this project Focal and when it comes to spending an amount you normally would get at least two other sets for it is first up a great gamble, but once you did spend it you will find that the difference in sound reproduction is mind blowing and with these Focal chassis it was money very-very well spend.

Far too many people still believe that you should use only Hi-Fi chassis and with that use 8 Ohm, but that all has changed so very much now as everything has advanced electronics, speaker chassis etc. yet not so much shapes, angles or the use of weight in enclosure. Automotive chassis are difficult to get decent data or more so data for a cross over etc. at times, but most of it can be measured so all in all you can build something like this as well as chassis like this seem to be more forgiving if you want to test & do something maybe even new & away from the norm.

The first week of running the units in is over now (out of a three month period) and YES everybody has its own ideas about their projects, and sure as a builder a project sounds always great, but of course to convey any of that is also more then difficult. So to describe my last seven days listening to these puppies has been maybe a time of some enlightenment for me in a way of learning a lot more when using a different approach simple through solid facts of some extraordinary sound reproduction even so these units are still not fully tuned or run in as they have presently a smaller volume then they will have in another three weeks when I will open each one again to make changes to a more original attended setting.

Anyway, but presently I cant fault them at all as the full range is immaculate yet the main chassis is a tiny bit to low which is to be expected when heavily reducing the volume & having a PR with a base tune of 30Hz running with it!

Im working also at the moment on stands which should elevate these units by 12 just as a test set up like with / without etc.

So sorry to say, but I expected say around (10 out of 10) maybe a 6 maybe a 7 tops! Yet what I did get AS IS. is a .. you maybe wont like it (and still 10 out of 10) more a 15 or even better.

Now I know you will think Impossible but truly I never heard anything like this ever before in my 25++ years of DIY audio, and to top it I had this backed up by several hobby audio people (Valve & Digital) and more so halve a dozen of pro musician like piano, electric-acoustic & classical guitar player, electric bass & acoustic large bass player which are frequently visiting to keep up with the - my audio play.

I would like to mention another item:
My running in musical data I use is anything & everything including Test CD's, Demo Cd's Etc. but to test truly a system on its merrits - Truly test it - I do ONLY use - hear it comes .... to my friends in India .... 'Indian Classical Music' as none of the Western music by far & so called music has even come close to the type of extention this music type can offer (I'm talking about music - NOT Bum, Bum).

Love the design. It has a... words fail me... A Swedish, Ikea vibe to it. Love it!
Cheers,
